Disappointed Liberals Moving to Canada

I just thought I’d resurrect this one from the dead after I found it while searching for much the same data as the OP was asking for,

First, let’s distinguish between simple emigration versus expatriation. Simple emigration or immigration can cover everything from a tech worker assigned to an Indian computer center for five years to a brewer coming from Britain to the States to take a job at a brewpub and planning to go home eventually, to a migrant worker from Mexico or El Salvador or Ireland taking a seasonal job to a “war bride” or Russian mail-order bride. Or someone retiring to Costa Rica or Australia. (I have personally known examples of all of the above save for the mail-order bride.)

What we need to look at is what we really envision when we see any blowhard–Whoopi Goldberg, Rush Limbaugh, Alec Baldwin, whoever-announce that they’re going to leave the country if Bush/Obama/Trump/whoever gets elected/re-elected. They have to renounce American citizenship and assume citizenship in another country, presumably one more in tune with their political and economic beliefs. This is expatriation, and the DHS has a legal definition and the IRS specific financial requirements and penalties:

Here’s a graph showing numbers over the past several years:

And here’s a clarification of the statistics by the original presenter, stating in effect that this graph depicts only the rich ex-pats:

Fuel for discussion and debate, anyone?

I will note that my various attempts over two days to confirm or refute this data (and others like the debate above) have proven fruitless for one broad reason: the Census, INS, Statistical Abstract, etc, of the US, and those of other countries as well, do a credible job of tracing and tracking immigrants, but pretty much ignore people emigrating or otherwise leaving the country. Internet searches for the likes of “U.S.A. emigration” return hundreds of pages of IMMIgration info, but basically nothing on EMIgration.

Hmmm… no surprise. The people next door are east indian - bought the house from the original Phillipino owners. Across the street are a Chinese, east Indian and Phillipino families. 3 doors away to the right is a chinese doctor, and 3 doors the other way is an east Indian who wears a turban. If I had to guess, in this upscale neighbourhood in Canada, less than half the houses have caucasian families in them. That’s the new face of urban Canada.

The catch is the immigration process. First, yes anyone can apply. The wait can be long, there are stories of people waiting several years to get accepted, even those with family to sponsor them.

I have heard that the recent changes to immigration emphasized job demand over family reunions, but there was also an article on the news about a Somali refugee from decades ago who had finally brought over the 100th member of his extended family. Once one becomes a citizen, they sponsor someone else etc.

Someone fleeing Somalia may be willing to wait 8 years, someone fleeing Cheney probably has other better options.

The problem with getting a company to make a formal job offer is that then they have to “prove” to the Immigration people that they’ve looked for and could not find a qualified Canadian. Unless you are von Karjan or some other star conductor, it’s simpler to say “call us when you have your residency papers”.

The easiest way to emigrate to Canada is to marry a Canadian.

I’m a single Canadian, but you had better be hot.

Canada has same-sex marriage, so it works for both women and men!

If you are a farmer you might have a chance of immigrating to Canada and homesteading (free land for you if you farm it) in the Yukon.

Really? Your own link says this:

Personally, I would prefer gruntled immigrants, but that’s just me.

And what can you possibly raise in the Yukon? A polar bear farm?

My daughter now says that if Trump is re-elected she will seriously consider moving to Canada. She and therefore her son are citizens and she assumes that she can sponsor her husband who works for Amazon (as a programmer) and can work from anywhere. He has not been to his NYC office in two months.

My wife and I seriously considered moving to US until Trump was elected. We have voted with out feet to stay here, selling the house and buying a condo.

Given that this thread was bumped by a spammer and was started nine years ago, I’m going to close it.
