My favourite Allman Bros number, “Down to the Whipping Post”, gets perfectly fine treatment from Daddy Longhead, featuring members from the Butthole Surfers and Scratch Acid/Rapeman.
Jack White’s version of I’m Shakin’ originally done by Little Willie John.
And another nod for Johnny Cash’s version of “Hurt”
I also really like White Lion’s cover of “Radar Love.”
I didn’t know for a long time that “I Go Blind” was not originally recorded by Hootie & The Blowfish. It was recorded by a Canadian band called 54-40.
:cool:Joe Cocker’s With a Little Help From My Friends = FUNtastic!
Was gonna put this in my old drum fill thread to highlight Rey Washam’s madcap triplets clinic, so here, instead, with an interesting take, let’s say, on Golden Earring, with Radar Love Lizard
YES YES YES!!! Brother Duane Allman on guitar.
freaking magical.
Nice taste in music there, Annie
There’s also an acoustic Haynes in the parking lot of Red Rock’s on YouTube.
Soul shine and it stoned me.
Simply Red, “If you dont know me”
Wow, the Beatles are getting mauled here. But they did some great covers, too. Maybe “Twist and Shout” is my favorite. Sounded great live, too.
Another one I thought of. ZZ Top “As Time Goes By” from the movie Casablanca. A nice, slow bluesy take on the song, driven by a pedal steel guitar. A hidden track on their Mescalero CD.
I was just being a silly goose about my Beatles comment. (which, for all I know, you were perfectly aware of that already) I liked their covers of “A Taste of Honey”, “Kansas City”, “Boys”, and to a lesser extent “Roll Over Beethoven”, “Act Naturally” and “Rock and Roll Music”.
Well, if you want to get into parodies that sound just like the original, then you’d have a hard time beating this:
Leader of the Laundromat by The Detergents
This other Weird Al parody is great too:
Bedrock Anthem
This parody is probably more well known than the original song:
Hawaiian War Chant by Spike Jones
Most of Spike Jones’ catalog.
Stephen Hawking’s version of Monty Python’s “Galaxy Song”.
I may get flamed for this, but I like the Bangles’ version of “Hazy Shade of Winter” better than the original.
Add to the list of songs many people don’t know are covers:
Sinead O’Connor’s version of “Nothing Compares 2 U”.
Always liked this Electric Love Muffin cover of Norwegian Wood.
Kinda different subdued version of Hendrix’s Room Full of Mirrors by the Pretenders.
Doggy Style do justice to Isaac Hayes and David Porter with Soul Dude.
Another flamebaity one, but Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Born to Run has been my favorite over the Springsteen original.
Ivy - Be My Baby. Turned Phil Spector’s wall-of-sound classic into a subdued, trip-hop-tinged ballad.
Dwight Yoakum - Purple Rain. Blasphemy? Maybe. But I still like it. Who knew Prince wrote a great country song? ![]()
Concrete Blonde - Everybody Knows.
Deftones - The Chauffeur. My other pick from this album was their relatively faithful version of “No Ordinary Love,” but this one is Duran Duran.
Brian Setzer - Sleepwalk. Brian Setzer is better at playing guitar than you will ever be at anything.
Rodrigo y Gabriela - Orion. Speaking of guitar players, Metallica’s classic metal instrumental arranged for a Spanish guitar duo. Brilliant.
.
In memory of Tom Petty (and Prince), I’ll nominate their beautiful cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps. RIP.
John Cale… “Heartbreak Hotel (Fragments) - YouTube”]Heartbreak Hotel Also his version of Hallelujah
Let me tell y’all 'bout The Dickies
So do I.
Devo, Satisfaction was great, mentioned upthread. I thought they did Head Like a Hole justice.
Liked what The Clash did with I Fought The Law.
