Discman car kit issues...

This is weird:

My new Sony Discman came with a car kit, which I promptly tried out on my car stereo. For some whacko reason, the sound only plays from the left channel - the right bank of speakers stay silent. The stereo itself is fine, and plays other cassettes and the radio on both left and right banks.

I then used the same car kit on my stereo at home, and it worked perfectly well there! I also tried it on a friend’s car, and it worked perfectly there too.

Any explanation?!

It could be a loose connection between the adapter and the discman. I’ve had trouble getting stereo sound with the aux-in jack on my car stereo unless I jiggle the connector around. Or maybe your tape deck is slightly out of alignment, and the adapter is made to less forgiving tolerances than regular cassettes.

One possibility would be that your car stereo has mono inputs instead of stereo. If you try to play stereo on a mono deck the output is only from the left channel and not from both the channels.

The other possibility would be trying to adjust the input balance in you deck if it has one(mine does).See to it that it is in the centre. If the input balance is biased to the left, then you get music only from the left channel and vice versa.

That can’t be right. If the stero has mono inputs, either the input is working and the same signal goes to both speakers, or it doesn’t work at all.

Like I said, I don’t think it’s the adapter which is faulty, because it works fine elsewhere; perhaps it is the alignment which is at fault - I’m getting that checked up over the weekend.

And, like scr4 said, even a mono input should play on both channels, so that can’t be the solution. I’ll look around if there is an input balance adjuster - I doubt it, seeing as this is a pretty low-tech piece.
