Discussion for the Israel-Hamas War: A thread in the Pit

You’re responding to a nigh 10-year member who has read fewer posts in all that time than there are replies to this one thread. Take that as you will.

That’s a little like saying Trump won’t invade Greenland or Canada because of how the rest of the world will see it. Trump and the current Israeli administration don’t care about that, they’re that convinced they are right and that convinced history will vindicate them… if they think about that aspect at all.

I don’t think the Israeli administration (and I emphasize “administration” because of the many Israeli citizens that are opposed to genocide) could exterminate all Palestinians everywhere, at this point they have an extensive diaspora, but they certainly could do that to those in Palestine. Lord knows they’ve made a good start on it. Certain members, such as Smotrich, are explicitly calling for it.

For starters, one doesn’t have to approve of Israel’s occupation of and policies in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem, which are the Palestinian territories, to realize that Israel has the right to exist as a nation. In order for Israel to survive as a nation, they need to withdraw their troops and rightwing Jewish settlers from West Bank and East Jerusalem, and to not even think of re-occupying the Gaza Strip. Having said all of the above, I firmly believe that it’s high time for the international community to move in and enforce the two-state solution.

Israel has nuclear weapons, so that won’t happen.

Do these kinds of statements mean anything? Or is it posturing for votes at home? I’m not familiar with Spanish politics. Is there a lot of anti-Israel feeling in the country that would spark him to call Israel “genocidal”?

How about just eyes open to what’s continuing to happen?

I’ve pretty much given up paying attention. There’s nothing i can do about it, and it’s incredibly depressing.

It’s depressing but also frightening – it seems like so many otherwise decent people are suddenly comfortable with rationalizing (at the very best) being on the verge of ethnic cleansing, on the verge of genocide, on the verge of mass starvation… does this mean that if Mexican terrorists came streaming over the border and killed my parents, I’d be so angry and so fearful that I’d be ready to rationalize away atrocities and embrace mass carnage? Would I support bombing civilian areas and infrastructure if terrorists were hiding inside? I hope not. But how can one know for sure?

When Saudi terrorists came across the border and murdered people i knew, and threatened a lot more people i knew (9/11. I used to work down the street from the wtc, and knew a ton of people who worked in the towers), i didn’t. I wrote to all my elected reps and begged them not to attack Afghanistan. But i was in a minority or Americans, i think.

Why is the URL of your link written in Albanian?

Article from Haaretz “What would victory look like?”

Netanyahu and his far-right allies may yearn for a World War II style of total victory, but there would be nothing Churchillian about it. Their vision of flattening and depopulating Gaza, while deflecting all of Netanyahu and his ministers’ responsibility for their failed strategy, is a Stalinist and Putinist one.

It’s up to Israelis who oppose this grim vision to insist on their own version of victory. A majority of them already support it – but, with few exceptions, the leaders of Israel’s opposition are still too scared to say clearly that only a cease-fire can now deliver true victory for Israel.

Pretty much sums up my view of the inevitable failure of this war unless Israel’s leadership completely changes. The current path hurts the hostages and hurts Israel’s future. Maybe it helps Hamas and Israeli extremists, since they’ll get to continue fighting for years and more on this path.

I can understand wanting diplomats to stay away from a dangerous area, but firing at them seems like a poor choice to bolster support in the international community.

“Everyone I don’t like is Hamas.”

And everyone I do like… is well-disciplined Hamas.

I surmise that the perpetrator was inspired by the Unitehealthcare killing, which was the first thing that came to mind when I first read about this incident yesterday.

Why not by the shooting of Duke Ferdinand? It’s not as if killing people for political reasons is a brand new idea.

I don’t think this guy went back so far for inspiration.
