I just moved and the dishwasher that came with the house is about as thorough and enthusiastic as my teenage son. It doesn’t get much done, and a surprising amount of food is still on the dishes when the cycle is done. I need a new dishwasher.
On checking with Consumer Reports, most of the top rated machines are Bosch. I’ve never had a Bosch machine and I don’t know a thing about them.
Has anyone had a Bosch? What do you think? Good choice?
I’m open to other suggestions as well. My 2 requirements are that the machine be very, very quiet and that it cleans well (see: teenager, above).
Love Bosch. Love Miele. Whether or not they’re worth the incremental $ is a very personal decision, but – IME – they’re exceptionally good DWs (and appliance lines, generally).
I have Bosch appliances in my kitchen including the dishwasher. Very quiet and cleans great. Full load with some dried on food and whatnot comes out completely clean (on a 3 hour cycle…that is the longest cycle…there are much shorter ones).
The last house we rented before buying our own had a Fisher & Paykel two drawer dishwasher (two dishwashers in one unit). The first thing we bought for our new place was the identical dishwasher. I can’t imagine owning anything else.
I have a Miele clothes washer and dryer. Love them. Expensive but they have worked flawlessly and are very quiet (I live in an apartment so the machines are in the room with me so this matters). Only minor gripe is their phone app is kinda shit but I really don’t need the app so not a big deal.
This looks interesting. I have a bad back, so less bending would be fantastic. I’m guessing it won’t just slide into the existing spot without some modifications. Definitely something to consider though.
Thank you all on the Bosch responses. It sounds like they’re very good machines.
No, It’s standard size; it just lets you wash half of a load at a time. The only drawback is that you can’t wash anything wider than a standard dinner plate.
Bosch is very good, Míele is even better, but more expensive. Is it worth the surcharge? I guess it depends: if you’re on a budget, don’t bother. If you don’t care about a couple of 100s, go for Míele. Same for most other home appliances.
Never heard about an app for those those things, wonder what an app can do for you when you are not there to shut the door.
The trouble with the newest Míeles and Bosches and such is that they seem very hard to improve further. The top models are way over-engineered. My wife and me were looking for a new washing machine (for clothes, not for dishes, but the same principle applies) six months or so ago: Míele: basic range, about 1.000 €. Perfect. Superior range: 1.500 €. Top range: 2.000 €. The improvement was simply not worth it, if it was an improvement at all. You could fill the detergent for the next 20 washing cycles all at once, for instance, and the machine decides every single dose depending on the load and the degree of filth to wash out (and the phase of the moon and… never mind). What is the advantage of that? So we ended up with the “basic” model, and my wife is very satisfied: enormous loading capacity, so silent you want to check if you forgot to switch it on (perhaps that is what the app can do for you?), impeccable clean clothes.
There was a Bosch dw in the house when i moved in 15 years ago
and it’s still going strong with no problems whatsoever.
(Although, tbh, i only use it about once a month, but still …)
I have the Miele clothes machines with the automatic add detergent and I love it. I am one of those who never really figured out the proper amounts of detergent so almost always used too much. It is nice to be able to just toss the clothes in, select the program and hit start. Easy peasy.
The only thing I notice the app being useful for is telling you a cycle is done. In my case I live in an apartment so that is obvious for me without the app. But, if you had the laundry in the basement of the house it might be nice to know the laundry is done without having to trek downstairs to find out.
Really not a big deal. Beyond that I can’t figure out what the app is good for. I don’t use it at all.
Miele claims that most washer/dryers have about a ten year lifespan but theirs have a 20-year lifespan. Dunno if it is true or not but they seem really well built (I am no expert).
Bottom line though is I love them and actually kinda look forward to doing laundry now (except the folding…that still sucks).
I can attest that the 20-year life span was true, I don’t know if it still is, as the span has not elapsed yet. My mother’s Míele lasted almost 30, and every one I have had so far has lasted easily over 20.
We had the Fisher Paykell two drawer and it was very good - until it stopped working. Parts were hard to get, service was poor (that would be a local thing, of course) and after being without it working for about four months waiting for parts, we just gave up on it.
Now have a Bosche and absolutely no complaints. Our plumber highly recommended it as well (he doesn’t service dishwashers, but gives good advice generally)
I just bought a Bosch. There are a lot of things i don’t love about it, but due to supply chain issues, we only had about 6 dishwashers to choose from, and this Bosch wouldn’t have been my first choice within the Bosch line. (I would have preferred the cheaper one with external controls. I hate that you can’t tell if it’s done or waiting to be started, i don’t like that it shines a light to tell you it’s working… And i have mixed feelings about how it loads.)
Anyway, the cycle is long, it is extremely quiet, to and it does an excellent job cleaning the dishes. It’s poor at drying the dishes, and it’s a little awkward to prop it open to let them air dry. But I’m satisfied. It’s a hell of a lot nicer than being without a dishwasher, which we were for a while.
