I am trying to use the disk defragmenter that comes with Windows XP and it keeps getting stuck at 85%. Is that ok, or is something wrong?
No - not necessarily. If you’ve gone a long while without defragging it will be glacially slow. About 3 or 4 days worth.
Switch to the ‘details’ mode and see if the little tiny squares are doing things.

If it keeps restaring or is very slow run it in Safe mode.
