  26. The Fox and the Hound

  27. The Lion King (First round bye)

  28. Home on the Range
Wow all my favorites are ranked horribly (except for Aladdin). The only way that the Sword and the Stone could be ranked so low is for princess movie fanatics to do the selecting.

  27. The Lion King (First round bye)

  28. Home on the Range
The only really hard one was Dumbo vs. Lady & the Tramp. I picked Dumbo but would rank Lady & the Tramp as one of my three or four top animated movies. Alas. Well, there was a little twinge when I passed over Alice in Wonderland for the Emperor’s New Groove. But only a little.

Plus–you (or “they”) gave a first round bye to Hercules but pitted Dumbo against Lady and the Tramp?!?!?  :dubious:

  1. Cinderella (First Round Bye)

  25. Peter Pan

  26. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (First round bye)

What, no Melody Time?! No Ichabod and Mr. Toad?! Both those classics blow stinkers like *Brother Bear * and *Home on the Range * out of the water. Mr. Toad even has a ride at Disneyland – something that can’t be said for most movies on the list.

And away we go…

  26. The Fox and the Hound

  27. The Lion King (First round bye)

  28. Saludos Amigos
Interesting game. I used to work for an animation gallery, so I have seen all of these movies…50 times each, some many many more times. I pick Pinocchio as the best movie not to make it to the final 4 (should be the winner IMO, but I don’t think enough people really remember it) and Snow White as the overall winner.

I know more of these by heart than I’m comfortable admitting.

  1. Cinderella (First Round Bye)

  2. The Sword in the Stone

  3. Alice in Wonderland

  4. Bambi (First round Bye)

  5. 101 Dalmations

  27. The Lion King (First round bye)

  28. Home on the Range

1. Cinderella (First Round Bye)

  1. Chicken Little
    33. The Sword in the Stone
I liked Chicken Little, but Wart as a squirrel wins.

  2. Alice in Wonderland
    17. The Emperor’s New Groove
New Groove should be a higher seed.

8. Bambi (First round Bye)

25. 101 Dalmations
40. Treasure Planet
No contest.

9. Lilo and Stitch (First round bye)

24. The Rescuers
41. Atlantis: The Lost Empire
Again, I liked Atlantis, but the classic wins.

4. Sleeping Beauty (First round bye)

29. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
36. Fantasia/2000

  1. Dumbo
    20. Lady and the Tramp
    Very bad first round pair.

5. The Little Mermaid (First round bye)

  1. The Rescuers Down Under
    37. The Great Mouse Detective
First ever inclusion of computer animation in a Disney feature.

12. Hercules (First round bye)
Seriously? This wouldn’t even get out of the first round.

21. The Jungle Book
44. Make Mine Music

2. Beauty and the Beast (First round bye)

  1. The Aristocats
    34. The Black Cauldron
The Aristocats ranks among the biggest wastes of my time, ever.

  2. Tarzan
    18. Robin Hood
Another tough matchup. Robin Hood is beloved by me, which beats out the spectacular animation in Tarzan.

7. Mulan (First round bye)
Does not deserve.

26. Fantasia
39. The Three Caballeros
Booo. I don’t want to pick.

10. Pinocchio (First round bye)

  1. Brother Bear
    42. Fun and Fancy Free
Are these seed numbers accidentally switched?

3. Aladdin (First round bye)

30. Meet the Robinsons
35. Oliver and Company
I just don’t like Oliver.

  1. Pocahontas
    19. Peter Pan
Are these seed numbers accidentally switched?

6. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (First round bye)

27. The Hunchback of Notre Dame
38. The Fox and the Hound
If there’s one Disney feature worse than Aristocats, it’s Fox and the Hound, but that’s a tough decision.

11. The Lion King (First round bye)

  1. Home on the Range
    43. Saludos Amigos
And now, singing: :o :o :o "Saludos Amigos! A fond greeting to you. A warm handshake or twooooooooo. Good friends always doooooooo. Saludos! Amigos! … "

This sounds like fun… could someone explain what the hell is going on so I can play too?

It’s a single elimination tournament covering most of Disney’s animated movies. For each pair, above, you rank which one you like best. On Friday I’ll report the results and we’ll have round two. Eventually we’ll figure out which one the Dope likes best, overall.

My choices and comments are in bold.

  1. Cinderella (First Round Bye)
    Good, but first seed? really?

  2. Chicken Little

  3. The Sword in the Stone
Not even close, I’m surprised they are so close in seeding.

  4. Alice in Wonderland
    17. The Emperor’s New Groove

  5. Bambi (First round Bye)

  6. 101 Dalmations

  7. Treasure Planet
I know I’m going to be in the minority here, but 101 Dalmations just doesn’t do it for me.

  8. Lilo and Stitch (First round bye)
Could make it into the finals just based on the “Why Lilo is late for dance class” scene

  9. The Rescuers

  10. Atlantis: The Lost Empire

  11. Sleeping Beauty (First round bye)

  12. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh

  13. Fantasia/2000
Tough call, both of them might have beat most other movies in my mind.

  14. Dumbo

  15. Lady and the Tramp

  16. The Little Mermaid (First round bye)

  17. The Rescuers Down Under

  18. The Great Mouse Detective

  19. Hercules (First round bye)

  20. The Jungle Book

  21. Make Mine Music
I’ve never even seen a copy of Make Mine Music.

  22. Beauty and the Beast (First round bye)

  23. The Aristocats

  24. The Black Cauldron
The Black Cauldron is an abominable corruption of a wonderful book, but even it beats the Aristocats.

  25. Tarzan

  26. Robin Hood

  27. Mulan (First round bye)
I hope this one goes all the way

  28. Fantasia

  29. The Three Caballeros
    Fantasia should be seeded higher.

  30. Pinocchio (First round bye)

  31. Brother Bear

  32. Fun and Fancy Free
In this corner, Crap vs. Crap

  33. Aladdin (First round bye)

  34. Meet the Robinsons

  35. Oliver and Company

  36. Pocahontas

  37. Peter Pan
    Aaaagh, Pocahontas must die.

  38. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (First round bye)

  39. The Hunchback of Notre Dame

  40. The Fox and the Hound
Wow, a tough one, but the Fox and the Hound wins for sentimental reasons, even though Hunchback is probably a better film. "I’m a hound dog. aaaaaroooooogh"

  41. The Lion King (First round bye)

  42. Home on the Range

  43. Saludos Amigos
A test pattern beats Home on the Range.

It’s a good thing Pixar isn’t thrown in, only a few traditional Disney stuff would survive the bloodbath.

Really? You should track it down, it really is very good. That and Melody Time actually. Good short experimental (at the time) animated features that pick up where Fantasia left off.

Make Mine Music has Willie the Whale, Peter and the Wolf, Johnny Fedora and many other classic shorts in it. It also has the amazing All the Cats Join In directed by Freddy Moore. This short and others like it revolutionized the world of animation, spawning a new minimalistic style of animating that lead to companies like UPA (who did amazing things with the art of animation) and eventually allowed places like Hanna Barbera to be able to get in the game.

IF you can find a VHS copy, and IF you have a VHS machine watch the VHS version. The DVD’s have been sanitized by Disney. The leave the Martins and the Coys out entierly. Same with Melody Time. Modern Disney likes to scew up their past. Unlce Walt (bastard that he was) must be rolling in his grave.
