I didn’t realize until I rewatched it that during the “Bruno” song you actually see him dancing upstairs. It’s when Dolores is doing her part-he’s on the upstairs balcony. Unless that was the shapeshifter kid?
People have asked the director whether that was Bruno or Camilo, and he says he likes the debate too much to tell the answer.
It could just be my particular Facebook algorithm, but Encanto’s popularity seems to have exploded. In any event, it’s unquestionable that “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” has reached a higher spot on the Billboard Top 100 than even “Let It Go”.
We need to talk about Luisa.
You aren’t alone. Luisa’s song “Surface Pressure” is resonating hard with adults and kids alike.
And they want Luisa merch. Which there isn’t a lot of. Apparently Disney’s marketing team completely called this one wrong, and in addition to protagonist Mirabel the merch team thought that girls would go hard for “perfectly pretty” Isabella. But it turns out that it’s Luisa they love. One wonders if the merch team even watched the goddamn film.
The merchandising folks are rumored to be scrambling to meet the demand (that’s off Twitter, so usual caveats apply).
Also, apparently the studio originally wanted Luisa to be yet another petite and pretty (but strong!) girl, and the animators had to push for the swole woman we got.
The world is changing, Disney. Keep up.
The merchandize has to be ordered months before the movie is near the final state. Maybe longer given current supply chains. All they could’ve viewed was rough animation cuts and demo songs. Not that that excuses them–it’s their job to predict the market.
I think Surface Pressure is in the top 20 too. With a couple of others in the Top 100. So, yeah, it’s exploded.
Bruno, Surface Pressure, Family Madrigal, Dos Orguitas, What Else Can I Do?, and even Waiting on a Miracle are all on the Hot 100. That’s two-thirds of the lyrical tracks on the entire soundtrack. The only three that are missing are Colombia, Mi Encanto; All of You; and the English-language version of Dos Orguitas.
I still wish they’d put the Disney Hercules in her song, just for fun.
BTW, looking at the Wiki on the film, all the characters are a lot younger than I thought they were from watching the film. Mirabel is only 15 as is Camilo, Luisa is 19, and Isabella and Dolores 21. Antonio is only 5. I don’t recall their ages being mentioned in the film.
Man - being told that you’re a failure constantly from age 5 to 15 would be devastating. Mirabel is less fucked up than most people would be under the circumstances.
And being stuck in the room that’s explicitly for pre-kindergarten age kids for 10 more years has to be annoying as well.
Not just 10 years. It’s implied that if the events of the movie hadn’t happened, she would’ve been stuck in that room forever unless she moved out.

Finally watched it last night. And then rewatched just the song afterwards and realized that Dolores keeps saying she can “hear him now” and she means that literally. When I saw it the first time, I thought she meant figuratively, in a memory, or something.
But no, she’s telling them that he’s in the walls - if they would just listen to her.
Anyway, really liked the movie.
Late in the movie she says something like, “oh yeah, I could hear him the whole time”
Which doesn’t quite mesh with the unable to keep a secret part of her personality. But maybe she tried telling people and they didn’t believe her?
I looked it up. It’s part of the final song.
“Yo, I knew he never left, I heard him every day”
Her whisper-singing is so good and impressive.
I’m not sure that’s who Dolores was talking about:
Dolores:
He told me that the man of my dreams would be just out of reach
Betrothed to another
It’s like I hear him now
Isabella:
Hey sis, I want not a sound out of you
Dolores:
It’s like I can hear him now
I can hear him now
Immediately after, Mariano shows up, the “man of her dreams”. But it’s neatly ambiguous, no?
As noted, however, she admits at the end of the film that she knew Bruno was there (and earlier she mentions hearing the rats whispering in the walls).
We watched it a second time. It holds up well. Characters and characterization feel more real when you know them already. Songs are more singable and the cleverness is easier to catch, although not up to the level of Frozen or Aladdin.
I’d have said it was much cleverer than Aladdin or Frozen. 
Is it better/catchier than Coco?
I watched Coco and I don’t remember one song from it (good movie, still). Conversely, I have “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” and “Surface Pressure” in my head often, after one viewing.
These songs have a definitely Lin-Manuel Miranda flair to them, and I dig it.
