OK - my fault for not watching the whole film closely enough. I caught part of the middle, and said something like, “Lemme guess - the old lady is the bad guy?” And my wife said, “Yup.” Wasn’t interested enough to sit thru to the end, and didn’t ask my wife for a recap.
Another question that is bothering me. Why does Mirabel wear glasses? Do the arepas not work on vision problems?
It’s a commonly asked question of the director.
Her mother didn’t see it as anything that needed fixing.
Seems to be a common failing of magic. Harry Potter and Dumbledore wear glasses.
A total hijack: Could a blind (from birth) person learn magic in HP? They could learn wand movement, of course.
Oh, God, please let’s not hijack an Encanto thread into something about Harry Potter.
Question cheerfully retracted.
I reached a major milestone today. My three year did not want to listen to Encanto on the way to school.
“Let it go, let it go!”
Did they want to listen to 4*Town from Turning Red instead?
My 18-yer-old still doesn’t want to talk about Bruno!
Not quite a zombie revival, but has anybody seen the Hollywood Bowl special now showing on Disney+? For those who haven’t, it’s the original voice actors (minus 1*) doing a stage version of the songs from the movie.
* The original singer of “Dos Oruguitas” (Two Caterpillars) was unavailable and was replaced by, IMHO, an inferior singer.
I thought it was utterly charming. Disney was definitely flexing it’s muscle with this one. The set was utterly fabulous and elaborate. The special effects were amazing and the actors really brought the feel of the original to their performances. I can’t imagine what that two-night run cost to put on. No way they made it back in gate. This was a tv special that a lucky few got to see live.
I did comment to my wife that: one, the actors mostly look a lot like their animated characters. I would assume this is at least somewhat deliberate. Two, that has to one of the best looking voice casts out there. Three, Stephanie Beatriz is an utterly amazing talent.
Watched it over the weekend and found it quite enjoyable, although obviously it’s one for people who really liked the movie. I agree with your summary including that it must have cost Disney a bomb and presumably was made largely for video content. The dancers for “Surface Pressure” were a particular fave, between the “strong girl” dancing and the donkeys.
I note John Leguizamo didn’t appear as Bruno but then he would have only had about two lines in “All of You” anyway.
The projection system the Disney Imagineers have perfected over the last few years was on full display. Overall I found it utterly charming. As wonderful as Stephanie Beatriz is, the real breakout star was the donkey unicorn ballerina.
Oh, did I mention my five-year-old son listens to the Encanto soundtrack most nights when going to bed? I’m honestly amazed I haven’t gotten sick of it yet.
What was the deal with that, btw? The floor and projections on the Bowl structure were amazing - but we’re the flying/floating effects “real”? (“Real” in the sense that people there could have seen them, versus the effects being added post-production.)
There was a giant Bruno that seemed to pop up from behind the stage that was certainly not really there, but the animation was done in a way to make it look like a big pop-up board. There may have been a screen or something up there that they tried to protect on, but what was shown on TV was added in post. I didn’t think it was needed.
I wasn’t necessarily glued to the screen the whole time, so I can’t comment on any other effects.
