Oh huddled masses, I want to display a cylindrical iron object and am not having much luck finding something appropriate.
The item in question is approximately 2" diameter and 15" long.
The closest thing I’ve been able to find are kaleidoscope stands, but they’re too small. Any leads on something like that but scaled up about another 50%? It also needs to be sturdy and stable - the object weighs around 10-15 pounds.
If I were you I would make a rough sketch of what you had in mind and take it to a local machine shop or fabrication shop. They should be able to make on to your specs fairly easy.
I often cut up sheet styrene and make things out of it. It’s relatively easy to work with.
If the cylinder isn’t too heavy, you could make a stand for yourself out of thick cardboard, such as the backing sheet for a notepad. Or cut it out of thin wood with a coping saw.
Wood would be a good choice, and if you aren’t good with tools, it’s usually pretty easy to find a neighborly carpenter or handyman who’ll make it for you inexpensively.
How much does the cylinder weigh…and does the stand have to be really, really pretty? Or is something rough-and-ready okay? For pretty, talk to a real cabinetmaker…and expect to pay for it. But he’ll do it right: routing, sanding, staining, etc.
I was hoping for something in wood like that kaleidoscope stand. And I was really hoping to find one off the shelf and quickly available.
That single sword stand has potential, but natural wood and plainer styling would be better. And, if the katanas in my garage are any indication, the “claws” are too small to hold what I need them to hold.
At least I’ve got another handful of terms to go looking for. How I ever came up with something unusual like kaleidoscopes, I have no idea.
It is starting to look like this will be a DIY project.
