Took me 3 weeks listing on craigslist as a freebee until someone came by and hauled my perfectly well working 56" DLP TV away. Not even a tube TV. It’s tough to get rid of old TVs.
Around here (Massachusetts) Best Buy will take it. You have to get it there yourself, but they’ll take it free of charge. I got rid of two big TVs that way.
Freecycle…got rid of all of mine this way. Posted and had two dozen people wanting to come pick them up.
Go all Office Space on it’s Ass!
Bust it up with an axe or sledgehammer into tiny pieces that fit into your trash can. Very satisfying! Wear safety glasses.
Bad idea to put it on the curb in my neighborhood, as the kids will smash it before it can be picked up. Resulting in jagged shards of lead coated glass.
My experience with Freecycle is that about 75% of the responders are no-call no-shows. That said, agencies that help the homeless or people getting out of prison will often take working TVs, even “fat” ones, and give them to these people in addition to other household supplies and furnishings.
My church collects them too, for this reason. We even gave one to a young woman who also goes there, even though she wasn’t homeless, because she was setting up her first apartment and I think most of us know how expensive that can be. We had an extra TV, and she didn’t have one, so why not?
p.s. Is there a Habitat ReStore in your area? Some of them will take TVs, working or not. They may even come to your house and pick it up.
The St. Vincent de Paul folks in my area will not only accept them, but they will come and pick them up.
I got rid of one this way a few months ago, now I have another (my last, thank og) to dispose of. I’ll go the same route.
