My old 60" plasma TV crapped out on me (it still turns on but it will randomly turn itself off and there is a strip down the middle where everything is red).
I thought I could buy a new TV and they would take the old one, but they won’t take TVs over 50".
How do I get rid of this malfunctioning TV without throwing chum into the craigslist waters?
Stick it in the front yard with a “$50.00 obo” sign on it. It will be gone in a flash. (For some reason nobody ever swipes anything with a “Free” sign on it.)
Look up your municipality’s e-waste policy for large items. Give the town hall a call if you can’t find it online. They’ll either send someone to pick it up, have you leave it outside the next garbage day, or ask you to haul it to the local dump. Some places will charge you, others will do it for free, others might even pay you to encourage you to recycle it. Every area is different.
Our neighborhood had charity groups that would periodically come through and pickup e-waste. They used it for fund raising. Some items could be repaired and they sold those. Some they took apart for components. The non-useful bits they disposed off. I got rid of a similar tv that way. They even came inside and got it. They would put out flyers the week before they were coming.
If you don’t get those, you could try calling around or looking for e-waste pick-up online in your area to see if anything similar exists in your area.
Why not craigslist? I’ve advertised give away stuff on there and just left it out on the curb. If it still turns on that is a big plus for people who collect this type of trash, so take a picture of it on with it’s big red strip. Use google maps to show your location, not an address and no phone number. Don’t reply back to emails and make that clear in your ad. Once it’s picked up delete the ad.
I’m not the OP, but I suspect all the “take it to the…” answers aren’t helping him. A 60" plasma is heavy, and too big to fit in many cars. I’d guess he’s looking for a way to get rid of it without having to transport it.
Not to advertise, but I had to get rid of a broken couch and television (picture tube, so nearly as deep as it was wide, with a built-in VCR) and I used 1-800-Got-Junk. They charged to take them away, but I didn’t have to move a finger except on my phone and to open the door for them.
A few years ago someone used my dumpster at work. A nosey neighbor saw and got his license plate number (plus the moron left the address labels on the stacks of magazines he discarded). I called the state cops.
The cop picked up the guy and brought him to my location. He asked if I would be satisfied if the guy removed everything from my dumpster. I agreed to everything being removed (dumpster was probably 1/4 full before he dumped his load).
Not true! We cleaned out the garage this weekend and I put my old Lawn Boy mower out on the curb with a “free” sign on it, and half an hour later it was gone.
