In baseball stadiums, typically how far is the outside wall from the outfield wall?
I doubt there’s a typical number. In Fenway Park the Green Monster is the outside wall of the stadium. In old Cleveland Municipal stadium It must have been over 100 feet from the outfield fence to the back wall of the bleachers.
It’s different for each and often varies even in one stadium. In Shea Stadium, for instance, most of the outfield fence was the outside wall, but there were stands at the corners near the foul pole.
I assumed it wasn’t standard. Seems 100 feet is a rough avg.
Here’s a site where you can look at diagrams of current and past stadiums. They have home plate to fence distances listed so you can estimate the distance to the outer walls.
Then what’s with the rows of seats with spectators, that I have seen behind the Green Monster?
Green Monster
Not a lot… but there is stadium seating behind the wall
Fenway Park’s left field wall is several feet thick. There are scoreboard operators inside it during the games. The wall, however, is not as thick as the seating above it implies, as seen in this photo.
