distant relatives

i recently met this person and throught my sister’s past work i know that she is distantly related to me… very distantly. Heres now: the uncle of my grandfather on my mothers side married the aunt of my friends uncle. is there any way to describe this relation besides distant?

(heres a little diagram if you didnt catch it)

Me – mom – my grandfather – my grandfather’s uncle :married: Aunt of uncle – Uncle – friend

OK, here’s my attempt. First, your data indicates no genetic relation because no common ancestor is indicated. So it’s some kind of cousin-of-a-cousin situation. I think your friend is…

your first cousin twice removed’s first cousin once removed.

I think this is the same as…

your great-great uncle’s great-grandniece.

Your grandfather’s uncle is your great-grandfather’s (or great-grandmother’s) brother. His (hypothetical) son or daughter X is your grandfather’s first cousin, also known as your first cousin twice removed. X’s mother is the “aunt of uncle” you mentioned, so her sister’s son, your friend’s uncle, is X’s first cousin. So your friend is X’s first cousin’s child, also known as X’s first cousin once removed.

Unless there are blended families involved.

Just out of curiosity, how exactly did you discover this? Small town connection came up randomly in conversation?

How about “kin folk”?
