So I just went to see District 9 again, because I thought it was that damn awesome. It’s unprecedented for me to see a movie in the theaters twice, but it is student discount night and I had nothing else to do so figured what the hell.
In the District 9 thread (which is getting kind of long, hence this thread) a few people mentioned the inevitable sequel, and what they would like to happen in it. A few said they hoped they will avoid making it a standard fare “aliens invade and fuck everything up” movie. I agree completely, although of course some big conflicts are inevitable and necessary when Christopher comes back with the Prawn Armada. I would like to see them specifically pick out some of MNU’s leadership for “experiments” much like the ones MNU was doing to their people. Or maybe they could use them as slaves to work alongside the drones. Of course, the humans will be pretty powerless at their mercy so the only way for them to have a chance at fighting back will be if during the interim they managed to crack the genetic code for using the alien weaponry. Maybe they had enough time to analyze the “fluid” while it was in MNU’s custody and were able to re-create it, and certain test subjects have voluntarily doused themselves to infiltrate the Armada as prawns.
As for Wikus, his humanity, and his wife. My first thought is that by the time the 3 years have passed, he finds out that his wife has gotten together with another man. Maybe another sort of diplomat who ends up being crucial in negotiations with the aliens. Wikus ends up talking to him and becomes enraged and attacks him, causing enormous stress on prawn-human relations. For a while he decides he wants to remain as a prawn, since there is nothing left of his former life now. But the prawns don’t accept him as truly one of them, so he ends up going back to human form anyway and tasks himself with salvaging the relationship with the prawns that he almost destroyed. He saves the day and everyone hails him as a hero. Or maybe he’s not even the main character in this one at all.
These ideas are not even close to fully formed. It’s late and just putting out whatever first comes to mind to get a discussion going: feel free to construct your own ideas.
