District 9

I just watched it, and it was pretty good. The setting was interesting, the lead character was fairly likable even though he starts out as a prick. The aliens were a bit hard to relate to, given the story, but on the other hand, it sort of adds to the realism.

One question for people who’ve seen it, though:

If the prawns have all these powerful weapons laying around, why are they so eager to cooperate with the “police”?

The prawns are basically dumb hive workers. Without any sort of queen to guide them, they bow down to pretty much any authority.

Well, we can clearly see that that’s not the case for every one of them. Which made me wonder.

Really long thread.

Cheers for that. I searched, but somehow couldn’t find that.

On reflection and discussion with some friends, I really think that had the movie been more like the first half, and ignored the temptation of turning into an action flick like it did in the second half, this would have been an all-time great.

My wife and I walked out of this movie about twenty minutes in. The pseudo documentary film style and the lack of a coherent plot line led to the decision. CGI could not save it in my opinion

Whoopsy! The documentary style ends about a half-hour in. Then just turns into a regular movie.

But, hey, you still might have hated it.

We gave it up just as they were trying to get the main character to fire the alien weapon. There was no indication that they were going to change the filming style. The story line up until that point was so disjointed as to be non-existent. We d ecided to give up up onthe movie and go out to lunch.

I don’t think you missed a whole lot. Or rather, the portion you saw up to provides a pretty good taste of what was to come. Sure, the ‘filming style’ does change (which was one of my original complaints), but the transition is actually pretty subtle, and I didn’t realize it until long after it had happened.

The movie itself does switch gears quite a bit in the third act, and not for the better–again, imo.

So if you didn’t like what you saw up to that point, you made the right choice.

Walk out of any movie you choose, but you don’t get to say “it lacked a coherent plot line” when you leave 20 minutes into it.

Also, I don’t get what was incoherent about the plot line. It seemed pretty linear to me.

Ditto.

Munch/Larry = Agreed.

I didn’t mind the change in style from faux-doco to action. It would’ve been too much like a preachy episode of Star Trek if they’d kept up the social commentary for too long. As it is, it’s like halfway through the director turns around in his chair and says, “Yeah? You got it? Apartheid and stuff? Awesome. Time for some action.”

To rephrase:

After twenty minutes to hallf an hour, we were unable to nail down a coherent, linear plot. Possibly, we were just unable to discern the producer’s artistic vision. Just in our ever so humble opinion, the movie just sucked.

Well, there’s always that DVD of Paul Blartt: Mall Cop waiting for you at home.

You mean the first 20 minutes sucked, IYHO.
