I’m trying to access a .dmg file in Windows XP and not having any luck. I renamed it to .iso, but I couldn’t open it with winRAR and nothing happened when I tried to use it with Nero. Is there any way to access a .dmg file in Windows XP?
It’s an Apple disk image file
Try changing it to a zip file. Probably won’t work though. I commonly use a program called stuffit which works with .dmg, .sit, and .zip files. Maybe some Win program that can mount a disk image. I’m not even sure if Windows has such a thing.
Whoever made the disk image should remake the image as a non-compressed, raw, “sparse disk image.” This is equivilent to an ISO, which you can rename ISO with no problem.
The thing, though, is if the disk in HFS format, it won’t work on your PC unless you have a program to read Mac-formatted disks.
Sender, there are paid programs for managing and using disk images on Windows. I use VirtualCD for accessing all of mine. It’s sooooo much easier to use virtual disks for everything rather than pop in disks all the time. One advantage is that it works on a hardware level, i.e., Windows XP thinks it’s a real drive so there aren’t any needs for “no cd” hacks. Some things on the Mac won’t work without mounted images, and still require the “real” CD – ugh!
