DMV (new CBS series)

This new series appears to be (mostly) satirical, and is set at a department of motor vehicles in the L.A. area. I saw the pilot last night, and this series appears promising.

Has anyone else seen it?

I’ve seen both episodes. IMHO they’ll have to walk a pretty fine line between satire and becoming completely depressing as we follow those sad, sad lives.

I saw the first episode, haven’t gotten around to the second.

Perfectly nice workplace comedy, a la “Superstore”. I’ll be tuning in each week, this is the kind of stuff I like!

Whenever I think of DMV headaches, I think of this old short story. On the one hand, they should make the TV show like it. On the other hand, it could give people…ideas. If reality became like the story, it would be horrible.

I thought of a scene from an animated movie from a few years ago, where the DMV employees were all sloths.

Which itself was an extended tribute to Bob and Ray’s “Slow Talkers of America” routine.

The A.V. Club panned it, calling it tired and full of clichés.

I’d agree. It wasn’t irredeemable, and maybe it will get better. The acting is fine, and if the writing catches up it could be pretty good. Two episodes in and the characters are one note, and the jokes are mostly ones you’d expect with office humor at a DMV.

To me, it either needs to be much smarter, or much more absurd.

I’ll give it another episode before I make up my mind.

None of the characters are particularly likable.

I’ve lived in multiple states and somehow I’ve never lived in one with a DMV that was called a DMV. These days I’m probably just as likely to come across someone using “the DMV” to refer to the D.C. metro area. So I had to actually check this out to see if it was what I thought it was. I guess I will see.

In the meantime, there’s this. I’m surprised it’s not being played as background music.
