It wants us to think that the employees are basic normal people and that they are incredibly weird losers. It wants us to think that the customers are basic normal people and that they are incredibly weird losers.
Ideally, there’s a line that it would walk that would make it all work. It can’t find that line. It doesn’t even find the parking lot the line is in.
Maybe if there’s a season two they’ll get it figured out, but it lost me until then.
The best reason to watch is America Ferrara. I think they missed out when they had her as being married; she can’t hook up with anyone else on the show.
I’ve watched a few episodes. I like Ferrera and Lauren Ash but I don’t find Ash’s character to be very appealing. I didn’t even recognize McKinney at first and I find the voice he uses in the show to be annoying. I find it amusing in places but nothing great. Many of the characters just don’t strike me as very likable.
True in real life doesn’t necessarily translate to true on the screen. It’s like the uncanny valley with robots; a bit off and it’s creepy. Here it’s creepy.
I tried watching it, but only made it through 2.5 episodes before giving up. I was hoping for so much more, given the ripe premise and America Ferrara. I liked her a lot in Ugly Betty, which was so much better than this wreck of a show.
I’ve watched. It’s just not funny. Kind of sad in a way, how far NBC has fallen in terms of presenting great sitcoms. This is the network of Cheers and Frasier and Seinfeld and Friends and they haven’t managed a successful sitcom in years. They’ve completely ceded control of Thursday nights.
OK, yes, 30 Rock was on the air until three years ago and Parks & Rec ended last year, but they both started much earlier. So it might be more correct to say that NBC has not originated a successful new sitcom in years.
Apologies for resurrecting this zombie, but I wondered if anyone was still watching/enjoying this show?
It is probably my wife’s and my favorite sitcom at this time. Every episode causes us to laugh out loud at least once. Hard to imagine a workplace in which you couldn’t identify with at least some of the characters/situations. Hell, I work in a government law office, and I could identify most of the characters among my cow-orkers. Their send-ups of directives from “corporate”, and workplace meeting dynamics are often spot on.
I don’t like every character in every episode, or every thread, but there is a large enough case and enough going on, that I enjoy it week in and week out. Liked the appearance of Ugly Betty’s dad (tho I didn’t like his character). Over all, my favorite characters are probably Garrett and Glenn, tho Cheyenne and Sandra crack me up quite often.
From the comments to date, tho, it seems ours may well be a minority opinion…
I really like it. It took a few episodes to catch its stride (so did Parks and Rec and Always Sunny), so I can kinda see where the early posters were coming from, but it’s definitely one of the better shows on TV these days, in my opinion. Anything with a Kid in the Hall is worth watching, in my book. Makes me want to go back and watch old episodes of News Radio now.
Oh, and she’s clearly going to divorce her husband (aren’t they already separated?) and hook up with the other main character, the young Alan Alda-type dude. They’re just drawing it out.
I started a tread some time back to highlight shows no one was watching specifically to give this show a shout out. I really like it. Jonah was on an underrated show a few years ago called A to Z which I also liked.
I think this is the most underrated show since Wings. For me, it’s hard to single out a favorite cast member, so many great parts here. They don’t rattle off one-liners, it’s more creation of absurdly funny situations and poking fun at corporate stupidity and personal quirks.
