DNFTT posts

You know what, I don’t mind trolls that much. They’re annoying, but there are lots of annoyances in this life. Frankly, I’d much rather put up with a troll than a slow DMV worker for example.

But people who make it their life’s work to chase every troll and proudly declare “Look a troll” annoy me. It’s like they’re some kind of self-appointed meter-maids or something. Ones who declare “Don’t feed the troll” doubly annoy me. Let’s face it, both the troll and the troll chaser clog the board with messages that noone wants to see. Frankly I don’t see a difference between the two.

And another thing: the posts that really get me going are those that say “Look a troll! Don’t feed him.” Am I the only one who gets how silly that is?

I’m sorry that my little notes irritate you. I have posted them to only three individuals who took on another poster’s identity. I don’t post them on individuals whose names I do not recognize.

I think it is too easy to quickly respond to a post by someone you think is someone else (it takes me a few threads to spot these). I don’t put them on every post - just enough to give a heads up.

I’d rather there was a different solution. Perhaps together we can come up with something?

I have to agree. Trolls post to see a reaction - ANY reaction.

I suggested that no one respond to them but instead e-mail a moderator, but nooooooooooooooooo. . . . no one listens to me. :::sulk:::

Alright, I’ll listen. I won’t do it anymore.

My apologies to those I irked.

My opinion? (which, along with 4 bits will buy a cup of coffee…)

Trolls are deliberate annoyances with no other purpose than causing trouble. No one has figured out the definitive, surefire way of stomping out the parasites.

Everybody’s pretty much “against sin”, but until that sure solution is reached, I’m not about to blame anyone for any reaction. Sure, emailing the mods must be included, but troll hunting and DNFTT folks aren’t the wrongdoers here.

I waver between no answer, and singeing their asses. Unfortunately, no answer at all doesn’t seem to deter some of the morons; they just merrily run amok, dredging up old threads, posting imbecilic threads, etc. They’ll cause as much havoc as it takes to prompt a response, or swamp the board trying.

So can we agree to disagree on the most effective means of reacting to the bottom-feeders? Seems to me that it’s a case of divide-and-conquer to split hairs with other good posters over reactions to trolls. The focus should remain on the dreary, boring little morons who troll in the first place.

Let’s see if I can keep this straight:

Silent-Bob, Reg. 6/21/00: Same observant, loveable, if quiet, self as always.

Silent-Bob, Reg. 6/28/00: Troll. This was a tricky one, since casual observation shows the same month of registration, but the imposter had a higher post count at the time of observation–busy boy. The posts, however, indicated trollish tendencies and the absence of the real Silent-Bob’s intelligence and sense of humor.

Tymp, Reg. 7/30/99 Longtime respected poster whom I don’t really know.

Tymp, Reg. 6/28/00: Troll

dpr, Reg. 4/00: Fine person, unfortunately based in the Antipodes for some transgression in a previous life.

dpr, Reg. 6/28/00: Troll

Saysha, Reg. 6/28/00: Real newbie who just happened to register today and who just happens to have a username similar to our pal Ayesha and just happened to start a thread that pissed a lot of people off. Sorry for suspecting you!

Lil’ Kiffy, Reg. 6/28/00: Another unfortunate registration date and moments of obnoxious behavior balanced by an apology over a misunderstanding and isn’t banned yet. I went with troll at first, but Lynn can’t call it yet. Any bets?
You mean troll hunters piss you off, Bill? Uh, sorry. Honest, it’s my first time and I didn’t inhale.

My two bits, as if anybody’s interested? They’ve begun to annoy me. But I try to live with petty annoyances. I’ll just go somewhere else until the weather clears.

[I posted this **exact post** in another thread but thought it would serve equal purpose here]

Mabye I can make a point here:

I WAS the “most fed” troll ever! My goal was to see if I could get attention. After I got attention and more attention I took things to the next level, and so on. And people just ate my shit up. Really if I had just been ignored I would have hung it up. And that’s what I still don’t understand. The way to get rid of troublemakers is to starve them of attention. No attention at all, whatsoever. All this troll hunting is dumb–it makes the problem worse. I just don’t understand why a board of intelligent people doesn’t get this! The goal of a troll is to garner a reaction. They are quite successful on this board.
[As all of you know, I am reformed and staying that way. I love ya’ll too much.]

I guess I’m just dense, but I rarely notice a troll before like 200 of you have already done so.

I think the moderators have it well in hand, personally. If we just ignore them, the moderators here slam the door on them and we move on.

And Silo, I never knew you in your troll incarnation, but if you had not told us you were once a troll I would never have guessed it (and I mean that).

dropzone:

I thought Silent-Bob had gone postal. He was so obviously not a troll to begin with. In fact, I found your post on a search before starting a Silent-Bob flame. Sorry to the real SB, this one was tough.

In honor of the real Silent-Bob:

If everyone loved the original-non sockpuppet/troll incarnation of Bob, why the heck are they both banned? Or is there a third one running around that I’m missing?

Of course, that’s the irony, idnit? “Do not feed the troll” signs are feeding the troll, right?

Yes, DNFTT is a light troll snack, but hopefully it warns all the non observant that that poster is a sockidiot/troll. I have been suckered in by them, myself.

And Bill, we are only using that to get rid of the current repeated “banneds” that resurface, often with a stolen name.
They need to be gotten rid of. If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. Once in a while, you have to do something you don’t like in order to go along with the community, if it is for the common good. A regular troll can be played with, at your peril, or ignored.

I think it’s pretty much consensus that there’s probably just one or two really lonely guys who sockpuppet the board in between their games of AD&D and Pokemon.

Solution 1: Ignore them and they go away… that only assumes “standard” trolls, not the imposters that can and have been mistaken for regular, respected posters. Is it fair to allow innocent people look bad because some loser can’t get a date?

Solution 2: Point out for all the world to see that these social-rejects have, once again, soiled themselves with the pleasure of doing something that their tiny minds believe is funny.

Solution 3: Find out who they are and have their Internet accounts cancelled, their IP addresses blocked, etc. While everyone agrees that this is the ideal solution, the Admins have told us that they’re waiting for vBulletin to hold up their end of security patches, so we’ve just gotta wait.

Personally, I just wish these trolls would get a psychic friend or go back to prank-calling Moe’s tavern.

Personally I don’t think I’m a troll, even though some of my comments may indicate so. My youthful exuberance sometimes overwhelms my common sense, so I look dumb and trolling, and I will definetly try to change that so I don’t get banned.

IMHO, Lil Kiffy, and Saysha are newbies. Which is all good. They are in no way trolls.

I was under the impression that SILENT BOB was also a troll (or a sockpuppet), albeit a harmless one. If I’m incorrect, I will certainly apologize.

I post a simple DNFTT to threads where I think people will respond to the troll as though it were a normal poster.

I also occasionally hijack troll threads. I’ve found that they tend to get pissed off when discussion continues and doesn’t concern them. And honestly, I enjoy pissing off trolls, munchkins, and lusers.

The one thing that cannot and should not be done is fighting them on their own ground or with their own tactics. Name calling, yelling, “Who are you and what do you want?” do nothing but feed it.

Starvation is of course the best and most final solution. But it ain’t always gonna happen on a board this big. Making them angry causes them to make mistakes.

Andros explained it best here. I post DNFTT to warn other’s who are not paying attention of the imposters. Occassionally I hijack a thread. BUT, it’s hardly my life’s work. Sometimes the mods are busy and the troll has a chance to hit several threads before they are booted.

If you don’t like it, don’t read it.

There are so many DNFTT signs out that they are worthless. A lot of the time (not that you are guilty of this), they’re just there because of a disagreement with the OP. Others may have a different opinion about the OP. The upshot is that people read the OP and decide for themselves, regardless of any posted troll warnings.

Wasn’t there a moderator who warned about being too quick to call a post a troll? I’ll see if I can look it up. That was the point of the warning, I’m pretty sure.

Hey! Why send them to m… what? a TV show? Ohhhh, I get it.

C&P’d from another thread.

[quote]
People, PLEASE do not even notice the trolls. It will make it easier for us mods to clean up. I know that they make tempting targets, but feeding them only makes them stronger. Lynn - Administrator **

If you have noticed a troll the chances are the rest of us have as well. The imposter’s post count shows up on my screen so I am assuming that it does on everyone elses as well. Isn’t it a little patronizing to assume the rest of us can’t figure it out for ourselves?

Ignore the pathetic loser. His threads can’t grow if we don’t feed them and they’ll fall off the page. Sooner or later his troll masturbation will get old and he will find another board to supply his habit.
