Do animals have ghosts?

But they don’t. So why bother?

What is a mind like, Eve (besides like a mind, which is obvious)?

Ignore ignorance.

[QUOTE=rabid_squirrel]
Heck, if all animals had ghosts, we’ll be up to our waazoo in insect, crustation and ameobic (do eucaryotes count?) spirits. Probably in the region of 1.4x10^6 megaspooks per hectare.[/QOUTE]
Irrelevent. So what if they all became spirits? How could one tell?
And why wouldn’t a few reincarnate and 99.999% not?

Irrelevent.
Ignore ignorance.

Fight ignorance. Ignore stupidity.

Man, I gotta get me some of that squamata moonshine - it sounds like pretty wicked shit.

Speaking of ignorance:

btw
snakespirit it seems like you are saying that the brain generates different frequencies of brain waves based on our brain activities. In fact, our brain wave patterns as measured on an EEG cover a range of frequencies at the same time. Different frequency ranges are named beta, alpha, theta and delta. When you are in a beta state, this just means that this area of the spectrum is more active than when you are in other states. Similarly, when you go into a alpha state the peaks in this region increase in amplitude.

Also,

beta - fully awake
alpha - relaxed
theta - ‘zoned out’ or daydreaming
delta - whilst asleep

which I note is different to your take on things.

SnakeSpirit, you’ve already posted a response in this poll-there was no need, outside of post padding, for you to make the next five posts, and it makes no sense whatsoever to make five in a row. Do not post in this manner again, please.

Well said, Middlecase, quite true. I awoke this morning with just that idea ringing in my brain… “Ignore ignorance? heck no! We’re here to fight ignorance!”

I confess I was tired, and frustrated, having come from a thread where just such a battle as I described was going on. I suppose I meant to say “Ignore the ignorant – those who by their own volition decide that their’s is the only valid world view.” or those who attack or ridicule other’s beliefs out of some mean streak or, well, who knows what drives them. If you let them, they will get you to stoop to their level.

But I like your way of saying it better: “Ignore stupidity.” Yet don’t underestimate those who make seemingly stupid comments; they are very crafty.

And this time I’m awake enough to remember my sig file

I’d like to see your cite on that.
My post-grad classes certainly presented it differently, but perhaps things have changed since then.

I think I’m going to need your guidance here, moderator. Let me explain what I do, why I do it, and perhaps you can tell me how to do it differently.

First of all, I did not think this was a poll. It wasn’t marked “Poll: XXXX” as I often see, the OP did not indicate it was a poll but a “question,” and several other people have made a number of posts, many in response to other posts that were made subsequent to the OP. Notably, up to your mesage, I had 6 posts, mangeorge had 8, antechinus had 7, the well-respected Eve had 3, and Zebra, Graywolf73, Amazon Floozy Goddess, and Middlecase had 2 each. I think a reasonable person would feel as if he were being singled out for discrimination here. This is not the first time you have singled me out for doing something that others were also doing, and to a greater degree, in the same thread. I don’t ask you to like me, but I do expect you to be fair.

My computer sessions are limited. I come into a thread, and I read the first unread post. If a response is indicated, I respond, if not I move on to the next post, and so on. I thought that was the natural order of things; certainly I have seen others do it and have never seen anything in the rules forbidding it. Please point me to such a rule if it exists, so I can print it out and post it near my monitor to help me learn it so that I do not transgress.

I have a condition called Anterograde memory disorder, which makes it impossible for me to read all the posts in a thread and respond to them all in a single post, as some seem able to do. It also makes it difficult for me to remember who is who (although I have certainly lerned who you are  ), and I also won’t necessarily remember all the rules all the time, though I do try.

As far as padding my post count, frankly I could care less about my post count, I never even pay attention to it, and you have my permission/consent/agreement to set it back to zero at any time you wish. You have that in writing.

I *would * like the simple courtesy as a paid member here to respond to those posts I determine need a response; perhaps you can figure out some reasonable accomodation which can satisfy your preferences while satisfying my needs?

I’m quite willing to cooperate with reasonable requests when I have the means. I hope you can help me solve this dilemma.

FWIW, I don’t necessarily believe in ghosts-although I LOVE ghost stories. I don’t care if the person telling them is full of shit or not.

And I don’t really care if it was a ghost or my own imagination-most likely. It just made me feel better and made me miss my cat a little less.

Snake Spirit, you have had 4 formal warnings.

You’ve been talked to many more times than that by our moderators.

You’ve had very recent email correspondence with me where I tried to set you straight, no pun intended.

You can’t behave, obviously. I just had to remove a thread that was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

It’s just too bad. We can’t be having this. Or you.

your humble TubaDiva
Administrator

I had no strong feelings one way or the other, but I’m surprised that it’s considered wrong to do what Snake Spirit did. I’m sure I’ve done the same thing–reading through an existing long thread and responding separately to statements made in several posts that were already there. I don’t think I ever did five at one sitting though. At any rate I’ve never been reprimanded for doing it.

Is there a threshold of acceptability here? If this is a rule, I think we need some clarification.

It wasn’t just this thread. It was many things. Like opening up threads all over the forums in a veiled attempt to have his say without his usual nemeses holding his claims to accountability, and also to complain about the Moderation that wasn’t going his way (again, in veiled guises of bringing up ‘legitimate questions’ {BTW, mods will let a person complain in one thread in the Pit, SS couldn’t play by that rule}). I called him on it when his tussles in GD spilled over into ATMB and the Pit. I’m sure that was just the tip of the iceberg.

IOW, imagine you taking your question here, reposing it as a question about the board in ATMB, asking for people’s opinions about it in IMHO, and blasting TubaDiva in the Pit all at the same time. That was our SnakeSpirit.

Peace.

I am a pretty skeptical person and didn’t believe in ghosts, until I saw one of my cat. I loved him a lot, and I had to have him euthanized because of his FIV. His body was in my car overnight so I could bury him the next day.

In the middle of the night, I woke up because there was a light in my eyes. I looked at the clock and it said 12:27. I remember that very clearly. There was a person-sized pillar of light in the doorway, which was a soft orangey color. I was awed by it, in a half-awake state, and a little scared, but not of it. Just of what was happening in general.

Then, it was over and I went back to sleep. The phone rang shortly thereafter, my friend calling me to say she could help me bury him the next day. It was 12:35.

Maybe it was wishful thinking, or hypnogogic sleep, or a dream. I really don’t care. I was wonderful. If it was a ghost of Thomas, I don’t think he was staying or anything. I think he was on his way to somewhere else and just stopped by to say goodbye. I’m grateful for that.

I honestly don’t see why people feel the need to ridicule other people’s belief in these things. If a person has the evidence of his senses, and isn’t hurting anyone, why come onto a thread like this, read it, and make a snide comment? What do you care? People who believe they’ve seen or felt ghost are not ignorant, and don’t need to you to fight them. Maybe they’ve have had experiences that you haven’t. Do you really expect people to deny what they’ve experienced because you don’t believe them? Just leave it alone.

I haven’t ridiculed the belief in ghosts. I have been skeptical of claims.

I wouldn’t use the word ignorant, but they haven’t used logic or critical thinking to decide what happened. You said

most of the other posters don’t show that they even considered possibilities other than ‘It’s a ghost’.

I have ridiculed and will continue to ridicule orbs. A photograph is something that can be analyzed. When that analysis constantly yields explanations that don’t require the supernatural, it is ignorant to continue to believe that these photos do show something supernatural. I am not claiming that orbs do not exist. But I have never seen any evidence that proves their existence.

I’ve said before that I believe in God. I wear a yarmulke. I buy kosher food. What I have experienced in my life is proof enough of God for me. But, it fails miserably to meet a legal or scientific standard of evidence. I understand that atheists think that I’m wasting time and effort praying to a non existent Invisible Pink Unicorn. I have no proof that they are wrong.

Maybe I’ve been visited by the ghosts of my own deceased pets, but don’t post about it or ask others to accept that it was anything but a dream or hallucination because I have no proof.

I never claimed that these people didn’t experience something. But the laws of physics among other things, make it unlikely in the extreme that it was a ghost.

Nah.
