Do banned members get notification emails on subscribed threads

But do they keep getting email notices telling them that there is activity in their threads?

I think notifications use email addresses, not IP addresses. But otherwise viable.

It wouldn’t last long..you only get notified once per thread until you log in.

Can I just say that “Banned Members” would be a great band name?

I just saw a thread with a poster that has “Banned” under their name, yet the green light by their username is on, seeming to indicate they are still around.

Banned members can still log in. But once their logon is detected, they get the ban notification page and cannot post to the forums.

Knowledge for knowledge’s sake.

I thought this kind of post was called threadshitting.

Yeah, it was. I think the general culture here for a very long time is that when a question is asked in *good faith that it’s considered at best rude, and more toward threadshitting to give a response such as “Why does anyone care about this?” with not even a pretense at answering the question.

Having said that, by implication it did validate Marley’s earlier response of “We don’t know,” just with the addition of “And we also don’t care.” I think there’s a term for that.

*And not one of these idiotic questions that pops up in GQ occasionally like “Who was the fifth president?” I’m making that one up, but you’ve seen them.

Well, semi-related.

Okay sorta semi-related:

Do the posts we make in a thread that is later disappeared get deducted from our post-count?

Not that I really give two shits about my post-count; just curious.

Okay, I’ll admit it: the above question has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the OP.

I believe as a general rule the mods here don’t actually delete threads, just move them to a hidden forum, in which case your post count won’t change. The exception to this would be if the mods are using the Delete Post as Spam function to wipe out all of a spammer’s posts in one fell swoop: that would actually delete the thread and your post count would be subsequently reduced.

As for the OP, I don’t know the answer and don’t personally care enough to find out, but if someone wants to do the experiment, feel free to register a sock on my board and subscribe to some threads. PM me when you want me to ban you. You can report back if you get emails afterward. Then everyone will go “huh.” and the thread will die immediately.

I understand Tuba Diva may be a bit crook, which may explain her rather short post.

Aside from that though- and this may be one for Dex- we are asked not to question publicly why a poster has been banned. The reason given is that TPTB don’t want them getting undue attention.

However, if they still get advice of what is happening in a thread would that not defeat that theory. (I must admit it all seems nonsense to me- if they have been banned and can’t come back, who gives a square shit about whether or not they get fleeting questions about why they aren’t here).

Correct, pretty much. There are two reasons that we don’t the banned to be discussed at length:
(a) Some persons are banned for trolling. Trolls are seeking attention (one might say, whoring for attention) and they don’t care whether positive or negative. Thus, the theory goes, giving them attention is “feeding” them. If they understand that their posts and their existence will be ignored, we hope they’ll be discouraged.
(b) Some persons are banned for repeated rules infractions. They may have been members for a long time, and built up relationships here. We don’t think it’s fair to talk about them when they can’t talk back.

On the question of whether banned members get email notifications on subscribed threads, I have no clue. We’ll look into it and try to get a response.

On the question of whether TubaDiva was “thread-shitting,” get real. So far as I am aware, “thread-shitting” is NOT so simple as asking “Why do you want to know this?” We alla time have people questioning the motive behind an OP (is it for homework? for instance. And there are lots of situations where the reason for asking a question can affect the answer.) Thread-shitting is a different aminal.

There is no way you can honestly say Tuba was merely trying to ascertain the reason he wanted to know. The phrase “who cares” is sort of a tipoff. It’s funny to see you ignore that while telling others to “get real.”

Thanks. Apparently it’s open to some interpretation.

Some people also apparently missed this part of the definition:

“And, of course, if you see someone threadshitting, please do not respond with
personal insults or accusation:”

Pretty rude behavior if you ask me. And I realize no one did. Still some people seem to take advantage of any opportunity to insult a moderator or administrator.

That’s what I like about you, Giraffe. You’re such a GIVER!

I’m with Tuba. If we don’t have to care about banned posters anymore then we should be able to talk about these f’ers after they leave.

Who cares if they can’t defend themselves? [I’m actually serious about this.]

So I took up Mr. giraffe on his offer. During my temporary ban on the Gee-Bo, I received no email notifications. Banned members, much like the common plebes of Ancient Rome, or the untouchable caste of Indian society, must manually shuffle through posts for the rest of their lives.

If you can call that living, that is…

Well… as long as there are constant reminders of their shame, then, all is well.
