Do bras cause breast cancer

My wife has been to see a doctor recently about a breast lump. It turned out to be nothing to worry about, but my wife has been looking at a number of websites to lean more.

She found a number of websites that linked wearing a bra to a higher incidence of breast cancer, and on further searching, found no health benefits to wearing a bra. Some claim that a bra decreases sagging, but most sites claim bras simply hide the appearance of sag, while actually increasing the amount of sag.

So, what’s the straight dope?

No, that’s silly. Bras don’t cause breast cancer any more than underwear causes prostate cancer. As for the sagging issue, well, have you seen photos of native women in National Geographic? Compare them to women of a similar age here, then tell me bras do nothing to prevent sagging.

I know it may seem silly to some, but some sites are quite adamant about a link between bras and breast cancer. Here are some links. Be careful, some medical images related to this subject may not be considered approprate. Viewer discretion is advised.

The whole “bras cause breast cancer” thing was an urban legend that circulated around 5 years ago. It was roundly debunked on snopes, but this is all I could find on it.

The American Cancer Society says no.

From this site:

'Nuff said?

Has anyone checked for a correlation between breast size and cancer? Becuase of course women with biggers breasts more often wear bras.

On the other hands, it kinda looks like the dudes that think there is a cause/effect with bras & cancer seem not to have worried about who actually wore bras but compared the overall breast cancer rates in groups of women in who’s country they don’t wear bras compared to “civilized” countries. If so- that’s hokum. In “primative” nations people just plain don’t live as long as those in “western” nations. Cancer *tends to be * a killer of the old, not of the young. Thus, if you die of something else before you’d die of breast cancer, then the breast cancer rates would be low.

And men have very, very small - nay, vestigal - breasts, wear no bras at all (well, maybe a very few exceptions) and yet several thousand a year get breast cancer, even so.

*NO, BRAS DO NOT * CAUSE BREAST CANCER!!!

It’s bunk. Hokum. Weehocky. Cow-patties. Even if the idjits pushing this “theory” are sincere and adamant, they’re still wrong.

Bras cause sagging? How ridiculous. Not even worth dignifying with a rebuttal.

I haven’t checked the site itself, but am I right in assuming that it just happens to also sell said “Oxycleanse”?

delurker - I work in a medical lab and run molecular tests for lots of different kinds of cancer. If you can think of a mechanism by which wearing a bra can screw up your DNA, I’d like to hear it, because I sure can’t think of one.

Wow, you must be freakin’ psychic.

So that site wants me to drink 190 ounces of water a day? I’m sorry, but the site seems pretty stupid.

From that site:

Nope, I’m sorry. Wrong.

The only purpose of my bra is to keep them off my knees, thanky-ver-much.

… and saliva causes stomach cancer. But don’t worry, only if swallowed in small amounts over a long period of time.

Peace.

Well there goes my breasts…

I’m sure you can find someone to hold 'em up for ya.

My bras have two basic functions – one, to keep my nipples from showing through my clothes, and two, if the girls are sore because of hormones they do feel better in a bra instead of hanging on their own. Owie.

Indirectly.

There is a correlation between breast size and obesity, and between obesity and breast cancer,so there is some correlation between breast size and cancer.

This may have something to do with the OP.
