Do cedar shoe trees ever "go bad"

I’ve got a few pairs of cedar shoe trees that are over a decade old. Do these things ever lose their effectiveness at absorbing moisture and/or de-stinkifying shoes?

They don’t smell of cedar as strongly as they did when brand new, but I’m not sure if that really has anything to do with it.

Or for that matter, any cedar (closets, hangars, etc.) used for moth control de-stinkifying; does cedar lose its effectiveness over time?

Sanding the top layer off of a cedar closet every few years restores it’s effectiveness.

Yep, they can dry out and lose enough essential oils to reduce their effectiveness over time. But as **beowulff **says, they’re quickly rejuvenated with a light sanding.

Awesome - I’ll give that a shot. Thanks!

Or there’s a cedar oil spray you can use.

I’ll look for that, too - thanks!
