Do dogs pee in swimming pools?

So, we’re at my niece’s home today for get-together. Pool usage alternated between the kids and the Labs. The question arose as to whether dogs pee in the pool, or any other water for that matter.

Given that I’m posting the question here, nobody knew the answer. If someone does know, and if the answer is yes, how the hell do you know that?

Isn’t that how ‘Old Yeller’ got his name?

I’ve witnessed dogs peeing and pooping in ponds, lakes, and the Gulf of Mexico.

We had a Boston Terrier who would swim with us in the pool. One day she swam back to the step so she could get out of the pool and stood up. There was a definite yellow stream pouring from her into the pool.

I don’t know about in pools…seems to me that they like to go while their feet are on the ground.

But like cstamets has seen, dogs definitely do like to go in the water. If you go to our local doggy beach you will see dogs squatting down when they’re in up to their chest. And I swear they have smiles on their faces.

My dog used to poop in the lake. She’d be in up to her chest, then get into “poo position” and then the poo would float up.

Neither of my dogs will go while in the lake. They will, however, hike a leg and let fly on my boat carpet. We’ve tried and tried to get them to pee in the lake, but they won’t. We can tell when they need to ‘go’, and put them in the water, or even on the back (slightly submerged) swim step, but no go. Once, my border collie got desperate and *swam to shore *where he climbed out and peed. Then he swam back to the boat.

I can assure you my dogs wouldn’t go in the pool.

My lab does not pee in the pool, but I would venture it’s because she can’t put her feet down. When she feels the need, she climbs out of the pool, runs behind a shrub in the pool yard, does her business, and jumps back in. Anecdotal only, YMMV.

Well, I think it depends on if your dog is territorial or if he’s not, if your dog is territorial then, I doubt he’ll pee in a pool, because dogs like to mark their territory, so grass would be a place they’d like to mark better.

Swim in a pool and you swim in the orifice juices of many. I’m sure Fido’s rectum got a good cleaning.

Yes also as I have witnessed, the ocean.

I’m sure dogs have the same experience we do when in water. I find if I didn’t want to pee before I got in, I do once I’m in.
