The radio’s fine but there’s no volume when I play a CD. I have it turned up to the max but it’s like The Clovers are whispering to me. Tried several other CDs and same thing, almost no volume.
Do I need to bang something or what?

Well, you could try smacking it. Sometimes percussive maintenance gets the job done. Sounds like a problem with preamplifier for the CD player, if the radio plays at normal volume. Other than kicking it, there’s little else you can do; repairs on most consumer electronics is rarely worth the cost.
I’m okay with getting a new one. This one lasted for three years, and I can always use it in the garage. It’s a cute little bulbous-shaped thing, and I’ll miss it.
