I just filled my new aquarium, and a friend has graciously agreed to give me some gravel from her tank so I can do a fishless ammonia cycle. This is supposed to be even better method than buying some starter bacteria as I have before. I hope it is indeed faster than in the past - I don’t mind taking the time because I like not having any fish immediately die, but I’d love for it not to take a month.
The question I have is do I need to poke holes in the container that’ll contain the gravel and bacteria in order to keep the later alive on the drive home? It’ll be in my car for close to two hours. I ask because I know that fish themselves will die if enclosed in a bag too long due to the O2 eventually depleting.
