Do natural "red-heads" exist?

When you see dyed red hair, it’s RED. But all natural “red-heads” I know actually have light orange hair (usually with pale complexions and freckles).

Does naturally red—not orange—hair really exist?

Yup. What gets people confused is that there are 3 distinct kinds of red hair. There’s the carrotty/orange kind, auburn, and copper. I think the third kind is the rarest, which is too bad, because (real) copper hair and green eyes, IMHO, can’t be beat.

Hmm…I am not sure which of the three categories I would fit into. I know my haircolor is very rare. In fact, the only person I know who has it is my 2nd cousin.

It is definitely not RED, but a kind of reddish-golden-strawberry-blonde.

If you look at the individual hairs, though, you will see that some are blonde, some are brown, and some are orange. Real red hair (except for the carroty red) is like this, which is why you can’t duplicate it in hair dye.

Hair dyes usually overemphasize the red, which is why they look so obvious. Yeah, Agent Scully, this means you!

By the way, Random, my eyes are dark, which IMHO is a pretty nice combination as well. I think I’ll just go to the mirror now and admire myself.

My hair color can vary from a yellow-blonde to brownish and many shades in between, including coppery. My beard tends to look pretty red. However, individual hairs vary from very red to brown to so-light-they’re-practically-clear. And, sad to say, one or two grays.

I dated a girl in high school with waist-length hair that was about the reddest I’ve ever seen. Still, it wasn’t the deep blood-red you’re probably asking for. I doubt that the color you find in dyes occurs naturally. It don’t happen, just like you’ll never find someone with truly green hair.

And if someone brings up those mutant kittens that had green fur, I’m gonna smack 'em.

You can’t get it like that right out of a bottle, but you can go to a high end hair place and get them to do it. I used to have reddish highlights in my hair, and my hairdresser used 3 colors of dye and painstakingly colored different bits different colors. Took 2+ hours and $125 - and that’s just for highlights - but it looked pretty damn good.

I’m also a member of the red beard club, although my hair itself is dark brown… which is why I don’t wear a beard!

Oh Rick! But the red beard would be so yummy!

Assuming it’s thick enough to really play with, of course.

My hair is somewhere between red and brown, and so’s my rug. Strangely enough, the hair on the back of my neck is black. If I don’t keep it trimmed and let my tresses cover it, people accuse me of dying my hair red! Things are tough all over. Caio.

To answer the OP: Yes

I was born a copper red, it lightened to strawberry blonde, then to blonde.

My cousin has dark strawberry red hair, wears it long. It’s gorgeous.

My nephew has carroty red hair.

My sisters all have dark brown hair. Wierdos.

Hmm. I guess I’ve just never seen a non-orange red-head.

There are SO many bad dye jobs here in NY—where you’d assume people have access to good hairstylists! But I see more Lucy-reds and straw-blondes and scary streak jobs.

TNTruth—that rug of yours . . . Have you asked your friends to be honest and tell you how it REALLY looks?

I was an honest-to-God redhead when I was younger, but as I’ve grown up, it’s turned to a light brown with kinda reddish highlights.
My father has brown-ish red hair, which was also brighter when he was younger.

Eve, LOL. My husband likes it just fine.

Oh, you’re a dame! I had this mental image of some guy with a William Shatner or Marv Albert rug on!

Whew.

I just want to share a nice story.

My cousin was born a red-head (ok, orange-head). My aunt named him Valentine. Isn’t that darling?

Eve, I’ll try and find you a pic of one of my buddies from high school. Her hair was as close to scarlet as you can get outside of a bottle, and completely natural. (If I can find a good one, it’ll have the matching red peach fuzz she had on her cheeks). Made me look BLONDE BLONDE BLONDE standing near her, and my hair has pretty much always been at least some shade of red (barring dyeing it blonde to get rid of Pippi Longstocking jokes). As I’ve gotten older, I’ve gone from a nice medium strawberry to a rusty auburn.

My hair is blond to light brown n the sides, but my beard is auburnish, except for my soul patch (the part on the lower lip) which is completely blond. weird.

After checking in the mirror, I think I fall in the copper red hair group. (The beard is the same color, but I keep it cut kinda short.) Also, I have the requisite green eyes, though their a greyish-green.

100% natural, ladies! C’mon and see it before the receding hairline wipes it out!

God is my co-pilot. Blame Him.

I have blond hair but my beard is red sometimes when I grow one.

do real red heads have red pubic hair too?

I’m with Handy and Bricker. My hair color ranges from dirty blonde to light blonde depending on what time of year it is (it bleaches quickly in the summer sun) but my sole beard growing experiment gave me a beard that looked like I stole it off a viking. I’m starting to think my face and my head have different DNA.

Two of my best friends are red-heads. One, Krystal, has the orange color red. She also has a birth mark in her hair… there is a strip of black hair in the middle of her head. When she puts her hair in a french braid the black hair gets woven in and looks really cool. My other friend, Rebecca, has the dark auburn red hair and she also has lots of freckles. My hair is a dark brown color with auburn throughout. When the light shines on it the auburn really stands out. Both of my grandmothers have auburn red hair though so that’s probably where I get it.
