It’s been years since I visited a chat room, but I still have fond memories of talking to strangers on yahoo chatrooms.
Tried googling tonight, but everyplace I came across was clearly sex based (HOT SINGLES WANT TO TALK IN YOUR AREA!!) Do general chatrooms still exist or has it been entirely replaced by twitter etc.?
IRC (internet relay chat) still exists (it was the first, I think) and there are thousands (of tens of thousands) of chat rooms on there. Sure some of them are sexual, but I am sure that there are many for many different topics of discussion. The good ones will have moderators and strict rules, similar to the Dope.
You might check out AOL and MSN. I think those chat clients still exist, also.
mIRC is/was an excellent client for chatting, and there are others, too. NOTE: mIRC costs some money.

There are, however, free IRC clients, IceChat, Hexchat, &c for Windows, AndroIRC for Android…there’s certainly Mac, iOS, and Linux clients, too, but I couldn’t name any, since I don’t use any of those.
I use mIRC, because the dice scripts for other clients kinda suck, and I use IRC for RPGs, but I’d be using IceChat if its dice script was better or I used it just for chatting.
My first time on the net in 1996, I spent 36 hrs on IRC, lol!
