And some seem to regard that feeble half-assed McCain-Feingold CFR bill as treason to the cause. Seriously.
The system works!
Yes, it was supposed to be sarcasm. At least I amuse myself…
I honestly believe that Obama is going to win in a landslide because some brainless conservatives are so offended by McCain occasionally straying from the party line that they’ll stay home rather than vote for him.
People would rather have someone they hate than someone they dislike, apparently.
Based on their reasoning, it’s better to not vote for Obama because he’s made a speech in an evangelical church, and I don’t want an evangelical president.
Let’s just see if they’re outnumbered by the Dems who stay home in a huff because Hillary wasn’t nominated.
There probably are people who think Obama is communist, but these people either have no idea of what communism is or of what Obama wants. Probably, they have no clue about either of those things. Even to say that some of Obama’s ideas tend in the socialist direction, as Shodan does, is such a wild exaggeration that it becomes an absolutely meaningless thing to say.
Well, if your definition of “conservative” would make John Edwards blush and if you dig Hester Prynne-esque punishments, then I suppose McCain is a liberal.
Oh no! The ankles! They’re teh sexy!
How about a bumper sticker that says…
** Obama Inhaled. **
Do you have an observation that’s relevant to anything, or are you right-wingers going to start pulling desperate irrelevancies out of your hats more and more as we approach election day?
Well people are bitching about a bumper sticker that isn’t true…so I gave them something that is true.
I guess, like everyone else, I’m also trying to figure out how your post has anything to do with whether people really believe Obama is a communist… or rather it’s just an opportunistic slam against a candidate you don’t like.
Back to the subject, I recently found this editorial. Basically, the author’s contention appears to be"
- Obama wants to repeal Bush’s tax cuts on the wealthy,
- Obama’s father proposed a similar scheme 40 years ago in a plan which might, loosely, be termed “communistic”- in this plan, taxes would’ve been increased on the wealthy,
- Therefore, like his father, Obama is a communist.
Well. How can you argue with logic like that?
So, no, then.
Yeah, that’s some pretty strong reasoning. You could say, of course, that calling everyone who wants a tax burden higher than America’s currently comparatively low tax burden a communist would entail stretching the definition beyond recognition and beyond usefulness, just like calling someone a nazi who thinks it might be legitimate to prosecute criminals is stretching the definition of nazi. But is that compelling?
The words “Communist” and “socialist” and their related variants are magic words in the US. They don’t actually mean anything you can pin down. They’re used for the emotional reaction they evoke in the average US citizen, because we’ve been indoctrinated for decades that communism and socialism were equivalent to chaining everyone to factories in some beginning-of-the-Wizard-of-Oz grayscale world. Which sounds a lot more like the Robber Baron heyday of capitalism to me, but YMMV.
There’s a difference. When you call someone a nazi, you’re not seriously arguing that that person is a bona-fide Nazi. You’re just trying to shame him into re-examining his heavy-handed political behavior.
When you call somone a socialist, you really mean to imply that he’s brainwashed in Marxist ideology–and there’s nothing he can do about it short of becoming a Republican–and you’re trying to influence the voters to reject him.
some people have this incorrect warped perception of Obama which is completely untrue… it’s probably based on their own ignorances, prejudices and fears. So instead of reading up on the guy, or listening closely to him, they choose to believe false rumors, like that he’s a communist … or a muslim (as though that’s a bad thing)… What are you going to do, some people are morons. All you can do is try to correct their irrational fears… and good luck with that.
How do you all argue about what Obama is or isn’t when from what I gather nobody here knows the man personally? Isn’t it just a bunch of hearsay one way or the other, and the whole bumpersticker/t-shirt/website in either support of the man or not is simply just smoke and mirrors? Unless the guy stands up and says one way or another that he is indeed a commie/socialist nothing other people say matters one iota. So in other words who gives a flying fuck.
 Same way as with any other candidate. He’s a public figure and at least some of his life is a matter of public record.
Which many, perhaps most, socialists are not, BTW.
Okay, well, John McCain is a pedophile.
I mean, hey, I’m just sayin’.
Yeah go ahead and say that, but I don’t believe it anymore than I believe a bumper sticker proclaiming that Obama is a communist/socialist. When I see something like that I just chuckle…and I am a right-wing conservative nut-job.
