Do pro baseball players loose wt. during the season

One of the guys at work is an avid baseball fan. He was talking about a player who had worked to gain 25 pounds in the off season, to improve his batting. He then went on to say that the player would likely loose 15 pounds during the season but at least he’d still be 10 pounds heavier than he was. I asked what was wrong with this player that causes him to loose weight during the season. He replied that all baseball players loose weight during the season. This doesn’t make sense to me. So do pro baseball players loose weight during the season? And if so why?

When I loose weight my clothes become too lose.

Anyway, I think the majority of players are much more involved in conditioning than they are in the off season. More active = leaner (if not meaner).
mmm

Some Red Sox pitchers were visibly 20-30 lb. *heavier *late last season than at the start. And not with muscle, either.

Conditioning during the season is important, too. But it’s not much fun, and easy to blow off.

Because they have to stop taking the steroids once the season starts (not a serious answer).

If it is true that they lose weight during the season I would assume it is because they are dedicating less time to simply gaining/maintaining muscle mass. In the off season they don’t have much else to do (if they want), then once the season starts you have hours a day of prep and game play and travel and everything else pulling at your time. Plus you probably want to pull back on the training so you’re not dealing with muscle stiffness and exhaustion during the games.

But I have no idea if the underlying comment is even true.
[ETA: Oops, thought thist was in a different forum where just random theory positing would be more appropriate.]

3 times? Seriously? 4 including the title.

Lose, lose, lose. :smack:

What a bunch of loosers.
mmm

Aw come on, the misspelling was the only way to get most dopers to even open this thread. Well played.

It was the “wt.” that hooked me.

My guess would be that if a player has worked hard to change his weight in the offseason, either up or down, his weight is likely to revert back toward that weight during the season, when there are many more demands on the player’s time.
