And sometimes they hang swastikas all over the country and declare to rule the world. Happened in my country, you can read it up.
Yep. My country was covered up in rebel flags.
Came back and bit us again recently.
And they try to make it into religious symbolism all the time.
Some state flags still look similar.
I passed a house the other day with a Rebel flag, A Rainbow flag and an American flag all flying. Man, I’d like to be at their dinner table one night.
But you still don’t mind if someone is flying a rebel or a swastika flag? Because decorations are just decorations? I sometimes really cannot follow your thoughts.
I think flags are pieces of fabric. If you choose to fly one that’s on you.
I don’t care to have one.
If someone takes offense they’ll go fly their own flag. Or knock on that person’s door. I wouldn’t advise that, btw.
It’s about as important to me as Trump signs in yards. Or “honk if you’re horny” bumper stickers.
I have one sticker on my car. An oval white sticker with the word Imagine one it. It might mean many things to different people. It means something to me. I don’t care who sees it. No one has ever remarked on it. Just like I wouldn’t remark on someone else’s.
Just trappings. IMO.
And words are just variations in air pressure or abstract symbols on paper or a screen, I got you. You don’t know how the world (or better, humanity or society) works.
I have been sheltered. I know that. The world is a puzzle to me, in lots of ways.
I think the swastikas and the rebel flag are made, by the true historical record to symbolize the horrors.
I wasn’t alive and in Germany at the time.
I wasn’t alive during the Civil war.
I’m sure at first they were considered patriotic.
And maybe beautiful.
I know what they mean now. I’m not that sheltered. Or stupid.
As a member of the Satanic Temple, I thought I’d throw in some comments about the differences between it (TST) and the Church of Satan (CoS).
When I was initially exploring Satanism, I read up on the 2 groups and made notes on what their differences were. Each group has articles/comparisons on their websites, but obviously they are heavily biased. I tried to keep mine objective and factual, and then decided to share it on Reddit. If you’d like to see at my comparison, take a look here.
Neither group believes in a literal Satan. There are some who do, who are usually referred to as “theistic Satanists.” They are usually individual practitioners or members of very small groups.
A big point of contention between the 2 groups is the use of the S-word. I’ll try to summarize the argument here: The Church of Satan believes that they are the only group with the right to call themselves Satanists, as their religion came first. The Satanic Temple feels that since there are many types of Christianity, why can’t there be many types of Satanism? CoS says that all Christian religions have a common source, the bible and the teachings of Jesus, and that different denominations of Christianity branched off of earlier ones. CoS comes from the writings of Anton LaVey (including The Satanic Bible), and TST started independently, not as an offshoot of CoS or using LaVey’s works as a source. So CoS members will say things like “words have meanings” and that we can’t just take an existing religion, change it completely, and still call it by the same name. TST members will reply that “Satanism” was already an existing word long before LaVey - it was used to refer to people (real or imagined) who worshipped a literal Satan. So LaVey already added an additional meaning.
Also wanted to add, I used to post here on the Straight Dope a long time ago. I haven’t posted in well over 10 years, mainly because I was having some mental health issues and ended up making some really embarrassing posts, and I didn’t want to show myself here any more. But I’ve been lurking from time-to-time since then and always enjoyed reading the discussions here. I no longer have access to that old account, or the email address I used, so I figured I’d start fresh. I still have mental health issues, but now I stick to venting to my therapist about my bad life choices instead of people on the internet. ![]()
Hey, welcome (back) to the dope! Thanks for your perspective as someone actually in the scene.
Also the mods can get itchy about multiple accounts, so you may want to message one of them to get your old account closed.
I notified @engineer_comp_geek about this already. So no need for further flags
I hate Illinois Nazis.
You on a mission from God?![]()
I think calling your book The Satanic Bible just screams “Lack of creativity.” C’mon, couldn’t you really dig deep and make a snazzy title?
The Satanic Bible is from the Church of Satan. I think the poster is from The Satanic Temple, so it’s not her book.
This thread is about TST, the ones who put up the statue and fight against religion in public places. I have no idea what CoS is about – some sort of actual humanist religion or something.
TST also has some pretty cool merch. And in my post, “your” was referring to the CoS, not the poster. Sorry, I should have been more clear.
Got it. I should check out some of the merch.
Wait, wait–which is The People’s Front of Satan and which is The Sananic People’s Front?
There are no splitters to match christianity.
What about fern taxonomists?
I suspect the people from TST are much more likely to be fighting for your right to get decent healthcare and drugs you can afford than the Baptists who object to them. I suspect they call it socialized medicine and that rot.
If they don’t like what I said, they can lump it.
