I agree. I’m in engineering as well. I thought it would be okay if I could find girls who were willing to think. even the girls in the engineering school don’t significantly improve the chances of finding one that is intellegent, and they are dropping out like flies.
The expectations of society do make being the passionate, intellegent, strong woman you want to be difficult. Or at least more difficult than logic says it should be. However, it can be done, and giving up on it because of society is such a worthless thing. Great people do not become great because they were expected to, they become great in spite of the difficulties. It is as individuals that people act, individuals choose to either chin up and deal or succumb. The playing field is never and can never be even. Play your hand. Love it or not.
I know it isn’t impossible for women to become engineers–that’s what I’m going to college for .
As I was growing up in the rural South, the majority of the women I encountered placed physical beauty before anything else in life. One lady in particular, the manager of a restaurant near my home town and a friend of my mom’s, never missed an opportunity to inform me that women should never appear in public on ANY occasion without makeup on or without a proper tan from the local tanning bed. I had to see her almost every day and listen to this–I guess I really let it get under my skin more than I should have though.
I know that all women aren’t like this, but it really bothers me that so many of them allow their lives to be dictated by the stereotype of the “perfect” woman.

Hmmm…well, if your talking about present day American society, you may have a point. But maybe that’s because this playing feild, while not level by a long shot, is one on the most level in history. Society makes it difficult to do certain things if you’re a woman (or poor or the wrong race or the wrong religion, etc. etc.) there have been times it made it immpossible.
Hisory is full of great people who overcame all obstacles (of course we’ll never know how many overcame all obstacles but one)but most people, including the very sucessful, do do what society expects of them. We are individuals but we are not, as someone once said, islands.
Excuse me? I think you’ve been hangning around the wrong teenage girls then. I, along with my friends, are intelligent enough to hold an adult conversation without the above interjections. Not all teenage girls are as dumb as you make them seem, in fact at least half if not most of us are ** a lot** smarter than that. It’s the stupid jailbait and cockteases of the world that make the rest of us look bad.
I’m with ssskuggiii. I happen to be a teenage girl as well, and although I know certain girls who do speak in the manner discussed, I’ve done all I can to distance myself from them. I think I’m all the better for it.
I’m the father of a 15-year-old girl. She is intelligent, a hard-working student who made the honor roll and is familiar with the works of Shakespeare and Jane Austen. She reads them for pleasure, not school assignments.
For “Children’s Day” (the day after the last day of school) I bought her a CD of Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons”. I’ve heard it playing many evenings when passing her room.
Handy, you’re sphere of experience needs to be widened in this regard.
As I said in my earlier post on this thread, no group is immune to having its shallow members. Just remember, when you stereotype a group based on its shallowest representatives, you show how shallow you are.
Lindsay has made enemies recently all over the board. I’d search and post the threads (four of them, at last count), but they’ve finally sunk, and I’m not gonna be the one to dredge them up again.
Maybe they would be warranted in the threads you mention, but it seems kinda premature here.
I’d prefer to wait until someone acts like a jerk in this thread before I start spewing venom at him/her – even if said someone has a history of jerkitude in other threads.
Heck, even Alexander Abian (of “change the Earth’s murderous orbital parameters!” and “time = mass” fame) could be level-headed and rational when discussing mathematics.
I am with you tracer. This is a legitimate thread with a legitimate topic and a few posters who have nothing to say about that topic come in just to flame lindsay. IMHO that is totally out of place here and should be in the pit. I do not know Lindsay and I have not seen whatever other threads caused this but I would suggest we treat each thread on its merits and not make this into personal wars. I am surprised the mods let it go this far and some people have not been given a warning.
She ASKED someone to do that and I just stepped up to the plate. Don’t get all mad at me if you leave yourself open for posts like that!
If you really want my take on the OP the answer is no. Not all women are like that. Not all men are like that. Not all old people are like that. Everyone is different. I know people in their twenties who seem obsessed with their bowels. And the whole losing weight thing is a national obsession that cuts across race, age, creed and religion.
Seems to me she needs to quit eavesdropping and get back to doing her work. I seriously doubt they are walking up to her out of the blue and spewing any of this at her.
