Watching the TV Land awards, every winning star was announced at the beginning of the show in alphabetical order. There were no surpises at all except for the award given to Lucille Ball, posthumously.
I don’t get it, really. Do all awards shows do this? Credits? What the hell is that all about? It shouldn’t surprise me…it’s all for their own self-indulgence, anyhow. Real talent’s dead, only Hollywood’s too stubborn to close up the shop. Real talent sold out to “pop culture” - a euphomism for “anything for a buck”!
Well, those weren’t just the award-winners, they were listing the presenters, too. They were, IIRC, billed as “appearances by,” which at the very least maintains the illusion that they are not pre-identifying the winners. I don’t remember seeing Lee Majors’ name on that list, but I could be wrong.
It’s a reasonably good idea (marketingwise) for an awards show on its maiden broadcast to do whatever it can to hook people in to watching. While I find it hard to believe that anyone was itching to see Bernie Koppel, I can imagine that at least one or two people hung in there knowing that Mia Sorvino was somewhere down the line.
