The problem could have been getting Shane to go through the whole song without getting lost, stumbling on the words, or going out for a drink half way through (or maybe all three).
I saw him on TV (Jools Holland Hootenanny, a News Years Eve music show), and it was pretty sad - a mumbling drunk with nothing to offer except memories of what used to be.

I saw that documentary. It is very sad indeed.
I think they’ll be inducted eventually. Far less important or talented bands have made it.
The way it works is that if the nominating committee like you then you are nominated until you get in, if they don’t nominate you you never get in.
The same critics just nominate the same bands until they get in. In 2006 Black Sabbath made it on their 8th try, Lynyrd Skynyrd on their 7th, the Sex Pistols on their 5th. Other nominees included 5th timers the Stooges, J.Geils Band, Chic, Cat Stevens, and the Sir Douglas Quintet .
Still never nominated are Rush, Van Halen, Yes, Genesis, ELO, Alice Cooper, Duran Duran.
Didn’t VH make it in this year? I’m almost certain they did, and only Michael Anthony showed up…
