Do these anti-piracy disclaimers really work?

I saw this posted on a message board where the board operators tell people to “Post Retail albums or the closet thing to it ONLY!!..” in this particular section. How is this not illegal and does this disclaimer do anything at all? Can you really tell the government that “Hey, you aren’t allowed to look at all of my illegal stuff and if you do you can’t use it against me.”

Nope. The cited Internet Privacy Act of 1995 does not even exist. Nor is there any similar law. Silly criminals.

Thanks, good info. How would I report said message board?

Go to the FBI website and click on “submit a tip”.

A hijack and definitely GD territory, but unless you are the copyright holder (or somebody financially linked to the holder) of the content being distributed without authorization you have no business reporting anything to anybody EXCEPT the copyright holder. So find out who holds the copyright on the content and send them a nice letter.

Bullshit.

I didn’t say you can’t, I said you shouldn’t, ethically. Infringing on copyright is a crime that is defined by the intent and agreements between the infringer and the copyright holder (usually there being none, which is what causes the problem). Reporting it directly to the authorities is unethical. This is GQ, so I’ll leave it at that.

So, take your case to GD and see what happens. FWIW, I would participate in such a thread.

Voila!
