Do those Game Doctor things actually work?

I’ve got a CD-ROM that appears to be scratched. I was going to just get it exchanged, but thenm I thought that if those Game Doctor things work, I could just get one of those and then prevent this and all future problems on my own. So do they?

When I say scratched, all I mean is that it takes the drive a few tries to read it. I’ve also thought about copying the data to another CD-ROM and burning it there, which would be cheaper than the Game Doctor.

Any advice either way?

I talked to a guy at a store that sold them, and he said he owned one, and it had worked every time. In fact, the model he was selling offered to replace any CD that their machine could not fix.

I did not buy one, but I plan to WIGAJ (when I get a job).

There’s also cd repair fluid. I’ve never needed it (if my toshiba dvd-rom doesn’t read 'em, my plextor will, no matter what), so I can’t recommend a brand, but you might want to give that a shot instead. Probably would be cheaper…

I’ve both read (in video game mags) and heard (at video game stores) from people with no obvious agenda for any particular company that they do, in fact, work rather well.
