Do threads ever dissapear?

I don’t even remember which forum I was in (MPSMIMS or IMHO, I think) but I came across a post regarding a website called “Whitepeoplearesmarter” or something to that effect. I clicked. I yawned. I felt like discouraging others. Then, suddenly, I couldn’t. Got an error message which didn’t mention the thread had been locked. In fact, looking for the thread again, I simply couldn’t find it.

Now, barring the fact I’m just seriously blind right now (I looked for the thread for a good 5 minutes), do threads ever, well, just dissapear. The OP was from a guest and since the text was essentially “Check out this zany web site!”, I’d say it’s safe to assume it was an advertisement. So, do Mods just eliminate these totally instead of simply closing them and allowing the curious to wander in, wondering “Why’d they close this thread?”

Yeah, exactly. Crap like that gets wished into the cornfield, by way of discouraging it.

Seems sensible.

Although the “your administrator may have blocked your access” reason gave me quite a start. I mean, what else am I to do on slow work days? Clean my desk? Again?

Spam threads and socks are moved to a hidden, Mod only, forum, I believe.
