Do we have a large Southern US contingent here on the Dope?

I was born in Virginia, and grew up in Mississippi and Alabama. My parents still live in Auburn. I was there last week. 70 degrees, and flowering trees everywhere. It’s snowing here.

Tell me again why I moved north?

Jacksonville, Atlanta, Athens (GA), and now 11 years in Memphis. I’ve lived other places (Tokyo, Kansas City, Boulder, Ames IA), but never been away from the South for more than a year or two.

Actually, come to think of it, I’m another Atlanta suburbanite; I spent about six formative years in Roswell. And my brother is still in Alpharetta.

Heheh, I have a pretty decent imitation of a North Carolina foothills dialect (and imitating’s all I CAN do since I grew up speaking a “neutral” dialect) that I will occasionally slip into if the occasion calls for it, like, if I’m ordering barbecue or something - what can I say, it’s a habit. This upsets my mother sometimes because she thinks I will talk my way into becoming some ignorant backwoods hick, you know, like the kind that was lampooned in Deliverance.

Whatever, I suppose it’s her version of the old wives tale, “if you keep making that face it will freeze like that!”
