Southern USA Dopers: Stand and be counted, please

With the remarkable success of the recent thread I started on Monday of this week, Non-USA Dopers: Stand and be counted. Please., I would love to see a similar accounting of Southern Dopers. Others may wish to take ownership of a separate thread to call for similar responses for some other geographical area. Perhaps someone could revive whatever older threads already exist on these and/or related topics.

I’ll try to maintain a little Notepad summary file of the replies and post summaries from time to time.

If you aren’t currently living (at least 51% of your time) in a Southern state, please don’t count yourself in this thread. Maybe you could start another thread to count “transplants” which might also be fun to see as a separate group. If you weren’t born in the South but do live here now, you can count yourself as a Southerner for the sake of this thread.

If your location doesn’t reveal your state, please mention it, since I’d like the data to be able to be sorted by state. Town or city isn’t a requirement.

Also, I’ll leave it to you to decide if your location is Southern or not. I saw a magnificent book yesterday at the dentist’s office that was about The South and even it had difficulty deciding which states to include. For my purposes, these states can be deemed Southern USA:

Alabama
Arkansas
Delaware
Florida
Georgia
Kentucky
Louisiana
Maryland
Mississippi
North Carolina
Oklahoma
South Carolina
Tennessee
Texas
Virginia
West Virginia

Unless you know for sure that another person is an active member, whether regular poster or lurker, please don’t list others who qualify. I’d like this to be participatory.

At last count, the non-USA Dopers list has grown to 120 unique names. I believe we ought to have at least that many Southern USA folks.

What say you?

Indiana by birth; North Carolina by the grace of Og…

Born and raised in Ohio. Transplanted myself to the FL panhandle…love it

Born and raised in Arkansas, live in Virginia.

Born in California, but in and out of Florida since 1977. Also did a five year stint in Atlanta, and another five years in Charm City.

Born in Ontario, emigrated to the FL panhandle.

North Carolinian here!

I live in west central Florida but I am not southren

Born in South Florida. Been living 38 miles from Toomer’s Corner since before the average doper was born.

Yo, Arkansan.

I live in Tennessee, but I am not a Southerner.

Why? Just ask any Southerner.

Dude, the “Volunteer State”.

Native South Carolinian, born and bred.

Transplanted New Yorker currently residing in Florida. Geographically, Florida is the south, but as far as culture? I am not so sure we belong to that group as the majority are transplants from the North or PR. At least in Central Florida.

I’m in Alabama. I grew up in Phenix City, lived in Tuscaloosa for a few years, and now I’m in Huntsville (the Rocket City), which is a great place to live.

Born and raised in West (by God!) Virginia, lived here all my life. No one’s sure how to classify WV, since it’s south of the Mason-Dixon line, but we were for the north in the Civil War, and we’re not on the coast but not in the middle either. If someone starts a poll for Northerners or Mid-westerners, I’ll probably answer those ones, too.

¿Que?

Born in Calgary Alberta, living in Austin TX.

Okay. In just over an hour we have these results:

=================================

At this rate we could catch the non-USA group today!

This is mostly just to show how I will be summarizing things. I’ll try to get a summary up near the top of each new page (50 posts, more or less).

Looks like Florida has jumped out to an early lead.

Come on, y’all!

I was born in Ohio, but have lived in Texas half my life. Still, I don’t consider myself either a southerner or a Texan. Of course, the demographics of Texas cities have changed so much in the last 30 years, because of influxes from the north and south, that the Texan identity is largely lost. You have to get out in the sticks to encounter genuine, old-fashioned Texans. They’re pretty cool, but I’m not one of them.
