A minyan is a group of Jews who are together for prayer, conducted 3 times a day. In Orthodox Jewish circles, it is at least 10 males over the age of bar mitzvah (13 years old). In conservative circles, a minyan may include males over bar mitzvah and females over bat mitzvah age (12 years old). There are certain prayers that may be conducted only if a minyan is present (this includes public reading of the Torah).
I remember seeing an episode of Northern Exposure where Fleishman is trying to get a minyan together. (Airman Doors: I think a minyan is 10 Jewish guys that get together when someone dies. I’m sure someone of the faith will be by shortly to give a proper definition.) He decided in the end that the minyan didn’t have to be made of Jewish men, but that it made more sense to be with members of one’s “tribe”; i.e., the townspeople of Cicely (the fictional town where the show was set).
