Early reviews of the upcoming “Hollow Man” sound pretty damn ho-hum. Can’t anyone do something interest with this sub-genre? Man gets injected with serum, man goes crazy and does lots of really anti-social things that the director would like to get away with, government agency hunts for invisible man, invisible man gets killed. Other than a couple minutes in the pretty awful Chevy Chase movie “Memoirs of an Invisible Man”, it’s just the same old stuff. The Scifi channel show is a big, fat yawn-fest as well.
Anyone read Donald E. Westlake’s novel “Smoke”? It’s got an original take on the whole thing and would make a great film, with a half-way competent director.
I agree with the futility of rehashing yet another tired SF theme, OTOH:
a) the trailer has some excellent FX that make me want to see the movie(well done, trailer editor, you hooked me.)
b)there is a possibility, however slight, of seeing Kevin Bacon nekkid! Woo-hoo!
You never know what might revitalize a subgenre or what cliched idea might be really good given the right production.
After all, no one wanted to see people in space ships fighting one another. Everyone in Hollywood knew that Buck Rodgers stuff just doesn’t sell. Then George Lucas came along . . .
In the original b/w Invisible Man (with Claude Rains), the invisible guy goes insane, and wrecks the entire gaff.
This also seems more in keeping with HG Wells original story.
Unfortunately, that dont make it good.
What is Kevin Bacon doing in all these poor movies, I wonder. Tremors 2, anyone?
A film where Kevin Bacon becomes the subject of a psuedo-scientific experiment that goes horribly awry. Lets see, I can name at LEAST 4 movies with this same plot. This man has GOT to have the weirdest case of typecasting in the history of film.
I guess I should have called this “do we really need to see another Kevin-Bacon-as-human-guinea-pig-in-experiment-gone-horribly-amiss movie”. For that matter, do we really need to see Kevin Bacon’s naked washboard ribcage again.
I thought Stir of Echoes was really good. Of course, that doesn’t mean that he hasn’t done recent crappy movies. I was just naming one that I thought was not in that category.
Actually I think Hollow Man looks pretty decent.
I take it all back. It’s just the one’s I’ve seen with him lately have been pretty poor. Stir of Echoes has an interesting story. Bacon remains one of my favourite actors anyway.
Even when thet rehash a movie idea it will be new to someone, take the remake of Psycho for an example.
Music is the same way, I am so amused when some youngster will tell me this song or that is so cool. I usually try to let them hear the original to see what they think.
Already been done, out on video for some time now. Never saw it actually hit the theatres, though. I don’t believe Kevin Bacon was in it. It brought back Fred Ward and the guy that played the dad in Family Ties, but I think that’s all of the original cast.
Here’s a couple links to Tremors 2, and apparently a Tremors 3 is planned (for God’s sake, why? WHY!!!?)
Okay, I’ll accept it as a popcorn flick, I just think it’s a pity that as long as they are going to the trouble and obvious expense of making it in the first place, why mot spend more than a buck-fifty on the story? It’s not like there are some good novel out there they could have optioned.
BTW, on a related subject, has the question of best popcorn flick of this summer been brought up? I was only born yesterday. If not, and no one else does, I’ll start a thread later today.
