Houston accents are the best. I can spot 'em from a mile away (to mix metaphors wildly). Male or female, I turn into a puddle. I’m so glad we’re moving to Houston soon. I also love listening to people from New Orleans or Savannah.
Rural accents, however, whether from Indiana or Alabama, don’t exactly leave any dew on my petals.
All y’all Shelby Foote fans, I agree–that man has a SEXXXY voice, and is one hell of a writer/researcher. The intelligence factor just intensifies it, because not only is his voice sexy, the things he’s saying are sexy (because, um, they’re intelligent. That didn’t come out quite the way I wanted it to.)
I’m from the deep south and speak with a low/husky voice. I enunciate clearly, especially in professional conversations (think Dixie Carter from Designing Women). I’ve always been complimented on my phone etiquette and professionalism in handling clients, etc. I’ve also been told on more than one occasion that should I ever desire to start my own phone sex line, I’d be a millionaire!
I’ve found that southern charm goes a long way in soothing ruffled feathers of disgruntled clients. My accent works for me personally and professionally!
They make me SOOOOOOOOO weak in the knees, I hope that’s not offensive or stereotyping or anything, but there’s just something about a man saying “maa-aa-aam, thank y’all” (or whatever) that just drives me crazy.
This is one girl who says YES, YES, YES.
And they even sound cool to me coming from women, because even if a girl is being a total bitch to you, she just SOUNDS so cute it’s hard to be mad in return!!!
I’m a rather (somewhat) intellegent southern. I’ve had guys tell me it was kinda sexy becuase I managed to pull off the southern dialect and still sound like I had a little bit of an eduacation. But, speaking as a gal, there is nothing sexier than a guy in a cowboy hat and boots, with the southern dialect.
As others have said, if it’s a “classy” Southern accent… yes. If it’s a “hillbilly” or “trailer park” Southern accent… no.
I also like British, Scottish, Irish, and Australian accents. Most other accents, no.
As a Southern man myself, I have taken some kidding for my complete LACK of accent. A guy at the university once asked me if I was Russian. I asked him why, and he said “You have no accent at all, and your English is too good for you to be an American.”
I was born and raised in Eastern Tennessee and I don’t like the Southern accent at all.
I refuse to use “ain’t”, “y’all”, and other Southern colloquialisms and I’ve talked to a number of people from other areas of the country and they’ve told me that my accent’s not too thick and I take great pride in that.
I think there are times when it makes a woman sound “sexier,” sure, but not always. Men with southern accents, however, don’t do anything for me at all. At least, none that I’ve encountered thus far.
Generally speaking, though, I like most other accents…British, Irish, Australian, etc, on men or women. Well, not French, but that’s the only other common one that’s an exception.
Wait…let me re-word that a bit: Southern accents on men don’t do anything for me by themselves; it’s not a turn on and it’s not a turn off (providing the Southern accent isn’t accompanied by vocal mannerisms of a more hickish persuasion).
'coz the accent will make you believe the gal can cook you & 30 friends an impromptu four-course fried chickin dinner including better-n-momma’s biscuits, weed the back 40, replace your Deere’s carburetor, kick yer ass at half-court, catch, clean & grill a half-dozen largemouth, clean her own 12-gauge, and have you clutching the headboard begging for mercy.
And she’ll still let you defend her honor, even though you and she both know she could mop the floor with the dirtbag…
I once called technical support in Texas for the the cad-cam software I was using. I talked to a person of mesmerizing wit, unadulterated intelligence and a phone voice with southern drawl to DIE for. I was hot for her for weeks and I had no idea whether she was black, white, young, old, skinny or fat.
A southern acent in and of itself is interesting at best, but coupled by personality, wit and intelligence (and a totally hot body wouldnt hurt) you could possibly classify that as in the top 5 of the most attractive characteristics to have in a woman.
Personally, I find an Australian woman’s accent sexy. Moreso than any Englishwoman’s voice I’ve yet heard. Olivia Newton John is just sexier than Emma Thompson. Though I do love the voice of Lizzie from “Pride & Prejudice”. And Judi Dench.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, I once dated a Yankee native who would slip back into a Lawn Guyland accent when on the phone with her brother who still lived there. Horrible turn-off. 'course that also might have been due to her tendency to start loading her language with expletives at the same time. Vulgarity ain’t sexy…
Actually, I don’t necessarily find the accent itself sexy, but a woman I already find sexy gets much, much sexier if she’s got an accent.
Reese Witherspoon in a photo? Cute. Reese talking? Sexy. Anna Paquin in a photo? Sexy. Anna talking in her natural quasi-Kiwi accent? Very sexy.
Southern accents overall are some of the sexier ones. But I’m a northern boy who couldn’t easily tell the difference between different regions’ accents, so I can’t get too specific.
As a person having a VERY strong Southern accent, I don’t find them attractive at all! As a matter of fact, I get very upset that I might sound like that. And of course I do.
