Do you actually LIKE mowing the yard?

It was just 200 sq.ft or so. I used a short handled scythe and it looked like a mess. I don’t know what the learning curve would be, as I’ve used scythes, both long and short handled, on multiple occasions in childhood.

And it probably looked more weed whacker-done, since it was uneven ground and I didn’t care that much for making it look pretty.

The bonus is I got lots of wild flower variety.

Fuck no, I can’t stand it. Driving a mower around in circles and trying to avoid being stabbed in the face by branches. Who the fuck enjoys that.

Luckily I have an apartment now so I don’t mow. If I ever do own a home I’m getting one with a small yard and a robotic mower.

I bought a big, beautiful lawn tractor when I moved to my present location and I love spending time on it. I have a pair of hearing protector headphones with a built in radio so I can listen to NPR or hook my music player to it.

Today’s cordless electric mowers are great. They’re even quieter and much more powerful to handle thick grass as any gas walk-behind mower. If you get one, you won’t be sorry.

I enjoy doing my yard but it is small and can be done in about 45 minutes (including weed whacking)
It also helps that I bought an electric mower last year (with battery pack). I can mow the lawn, then tip the mower up and wipe away the grass and then carry the mower into my basement (it is much lighter than a standard mower) and store it there.
The fact that it is quieter also allows me to listen to music/podcasts while doing the yard.

I hate mowing, and pay my nephew to do it. Scared of those sharp, spinning blades, actually.

I need a “other” ------- and I want some pie with that as well.

I like mowing but it sets the Hell out of my allergies to the point that if I cut the grass I’m on Drixoral or Pseudophed for the next week. I can make it slightly better for myself using a non-motorized push mower

and our lawn is certainly small enough. But since the Old Wench enjoys it more than I do with her fancy electric mower I just let her have the fun.

I like to mow, and I miss being able to. I like any chore that allows me to see immediate results from my efforts, and mowing counts. But living in south Georgia, especially lately when it seems like the heat comes earlier in the year and hits harder - my MS won’t let me out of the house, much less to do any sort of moving about.
I do the yardwork in the “winter” (hahahaha) when the temps are back to a cool 78 degrees.

I enjoy gardening, but am not a big fan of grass. If I were solely responsible for all gardening decisions, we’d have considerably less grass in both front and back.

As it is, i inherited the gas mower from my son who used to do it. If/when it dies, I’ll look into electric options. Had an electric some time ago which would not stay charged long enough to do our not-huge suburban lawn. But I hear they have gotten better. This spring/summer, it seems the grass is so lush that it cakes up on the underside of the mower, and leaves big clumps. But I don’t need a perfect lawn.

Really dislike the sound of gas mowers, blowers, etc. And hate the idea of how polluting they are.

So I’m not a huge fan, but I’d rather mow than wash floors inside - which I have to do today!

You and me both!

I’ve never enjoyed the task, but several years ago I ran over a yellowjacket nest while mowing. I’ve paid someone else to mow ever since. Never, ever, ever again.

I hate it so much that I had all of the grass removed from our yard, then gave the mower and trimmer to the guys who did the work.

We have a small lawn that is really quite attractive, bordered by gardens and trees. Me and my electric mower can handle the job in about 20 minutes. I don’t look forward to it, but I’d say I enjoy it.

ETA: Except one year when we had a bunch of snakes. I hate running over snakes with a lawnmower. (They seemed to dislike it too)

I vote for this. Although that’s a general answer. My current yards are so small that the act of mowing is a series of constant turns. That’s just more fiddly.

It’s harder getting around to it than actually doing it. As long as the mower starts I’m pretty happy from then on. Wish it didn’t take 2 hours to do the whole thing. I wouldn’t mow at all if my yard didn’t turn into a weedy grassland without mowing.

Where’s the “it depends” option?

I enjoy mowing at Mom’s old farm, as I use my antique Kubota G5200 3 cylinder diesel garden tractor, it’s a big lawn that takes 2 hours to mow, and is somewhat hilly

I don’t like mowing at my place, even though the lawn is significantly smaller, as all I have there is a 6.5 HP Craftsman mulching push mower, not even self propelled.

Once Mom sells the farm and moves to a smaller home, the Kubota will be coming to my place as she doesn’t like using it, and she wants a small riding mower instead

Once I have the Kubota, I’ll be able to mow my yard, as well as my neighbors yards just to be a good neighbor, it takes me about 30-45 minutes to do my lawn with the pusher, with the Kubota I could finish my yard in about 5-10 minutes, plus in the winter, I could plow driveways with the single stage snowthrower on the tractor

Diesel tractors are designed for long periods of work, so I’d need to do more than my yard to keep the wear and tear down, short runs aren’t particularly good for diesel power equipment

As an added amusement, that’s mean my tractor, car, and house basically run on the same fuel (home heating oil is basically diesel fuel with added dyes to indicate if it has been used in road vehicles)

I’ve always enjoyed mowing. I made good money mowing several yards in junior high and high school.

Still enjoy mowing my yard early in the morning before it gets hot. Takes about 45 without my bagger, or an hour if I bag the clippings.

I use a 1970’s Lawn Boy. I like them because they’re lightweight and fairly quiet. My dad serviced small engines and preferred lawn boy. He fixed up two for me and now I keep them running.

It’s good exercise. I started using a dust mask a few years ago to avoid sucking in dirt & pollen.

This^. Between the acre or so of lawn (riding mower) and the pastures (tractor and brush hog), mowing takes about 8 hours. I rarely do it all in one day, so I end up on one or the other a couple of times each week so that it all gets cut over a 1.5 - 2-week rotation. I don’t dislike it, but it’s not something I look forward to, either. Gotta get more goats (of course, that means more fence work, which is much harder labor than sitting on a machine).

Trimming and weeding, however, I can absolutely do without.

Who the heck invented the idea of planting a crop that you can’t eat, can’t sell, and have to harvest twice a month?

Regards,
Shodan

I would have voted “Other”.

I do enjoy mowing/weedeating when the temperatures are pleasant. It’s a sort of Zen type experience where I can mostly shut my brain down and just do, without having to worry about anything more critical than not mowing over toys or dog turds.

Problem is, most of the time that the temperatures are pleasant, it’s either early in the mornings on weekends, or a couple of very narrow bands of the year when it’s not super-hot/humid/rife with mosquitoes in the evenings. So I’m faced with the prospect of mowing myself in the hot, frequently humid and mosquito-ridden evenings, or waking up early on the weekends to mow. Neither of those prospects is pleasant, so I pay some guys to mow, weedeat and keep my hedges trimmed.

Worth every dollar.

Mowing/weed-whacking my yard takes about an hour. I work up a good sweat. Any day I mow is a day I don’t have to get on the treadmill or listen to my wife nag me to exercise, so for me mowing is a great pleasure.
