Well, I, for one, don’t always have room for desert. In fact, I pretty much never do. After stuffing my belly with hot food to the bursting point, the thought of any kind of food, desserts included, turns my stomach.
I do enjoy dessert foods, but the only time I eat them is between meals. Am I a freak? Do you guys always have room for one more bowl of ice cream?
I have a habit of checking the Dessert Menu List, and if there is something realing good, I will not finish my dinner, I may eat only half of it and take home, to have room for Dessert.
Is it fair to say “it varies”? I don’t always have a dessert. I order what main meal I want and try to leave room for a reasonable dessert, but I finish the meal and then decide. As a rule, the dessert is heavy: ice cream, pie a la mode, or some pastry confection, occasionally sherbet or sorbet.
At home I make sure I have room for dessert by eating it first. Sometimes that’s the meal!
I do indeed always have room for dessert. Even when I honestly feel full, completely stuffed, when it comes to non-sweet food. It’s like it’s a completely different stomach or something…
Interestingly enough, when I was actively overweight (not trying to do anything about it, in other words), I did always have room for dessert. Now that I’m physically fit and have lost a significant amount of weight, I’ve apparently retrained myself, and I rarely have room for dessert if I haven’t consciously eaten less than I wanted of the main course.
I leave room for dessert, and even after I have it there’s still room for more. I’ve really trained myself (since losing about 60 lbs.) to eat until I’m satisfied instead of eating until I can’t comfortably have another helping of something that was particularly good or have that ice cream bar or slice of pie. Mm, pie.
This was a subject discussed widely when I attended culinary school. Seems that taste buds will burn out after a few bites of the same food (you can still eat it, of course, but it’s not as interesting as those first few bites). That’s why having a meal of several courses can be far more satisfying than one HUGE plate of just one thing. And this, of course, explains this particular phenomenon of being able to eat dessert while full otherwise.
Now, that being said, it really depends on what kind of meal I’ve had on whether or not I’ll have dessert. Often enough, I usually go for it, especially if I’m at a new restaurant. I always have to check out the other guy’s desserts.
I seem to have lost my sweet tooth somewhere along the way. I usually am more interested in the meal than dessert although some folks I know seem to endure the meal so they can get to the dessert.
Even if I’ve had a 19 course meal I will always have room for dessert! Especially if it’s chocolate bread pudding or creme brulee. As Melandry has already stated, I honestly do think there is a separate chamber/stomach where all the dessert goes!
