“The national holiday is celebrated every year on the last Friday in April; it is a civic holiday in Nebraska. Each state celebrates its own state holiday. The customary observance is to plant a tree. On the first Arbor Day 1 million trees were planted”
For many, this is now overshadowed by Earth Day, April 22.
But here the tradition has gone on so long that it’s stronger every year
Well, every year I used to pull out my copy of It’s Arbor Day Charlie Brown and give it a watch, but it broke last year- anyone know when and what channel it will be on?
A few years ago Mr. S was working as a custodian at an elementary school, and for Arbor Day they took the kids to . . . a dairy farm. He was the only one at the school (teachers included – he asked around) who thought that was an unusual choice, as opposed to, say, a nursery or a forest.
I’ve read about special tree-planting events in the past for Arbor Day here, right back to the 1890s – but I never realised how varied the dates for it are around the world. More than just for the sake of the hemispheric season differences.
When I first moved to Colorado about 20 years ago, you could write in to get “saplings” for free on Arbor Day. Being in a new house with no landscaping, I did. I got 10 six-inch long Blue Spuce trees, which I planted. I think I ended up running over nine of them with the lawnmower, but the tenth is in my side yard, close to 20’ tall. I moved to a new house after two years in the old one, and I dug it up and transplanted it here.
I think of Arbor Day when I look at that tree, but I have no idea when it is. Is it today?
Well, late January isn’t a horrible time to plant trees, in Florida, but I’d wait until later. And no way am I planting a cabbage palmetto. Sheesh. I want to plant some more flowering trees, so maybe I’ll do that on National Arbor Day.
I always go out for a drink on Arbor Day. Then again, I go out for a drink on Pee Wee Herman’s Birthday, Bastille Day, World Hunger Day, International Right to Life Week, and National Mustard Month, among others.
I live about forty miles north of Arbor Lodge. This was the home of J. Sterling Morton (the salt guy) who started Arbor Day. His mansion can be rented out for weddings and such. It sits on the edge of a working apple orchard, and has a nice hotel on the property. My wife and i get down there a few times a year to spend a quiet weekend
