I like getting dressed up for an occasion that truly is formal. I went on a cruise last year and they had two “formal nights” but it’s kind of bullshit because it’s an arbitrary declaration. It’s playing “dress up”. Not like being in someone’s wedding or something.
I wouldn’t have bought a tux just for the cruise. I wore a dark suit & tie.
I love dressing up. I own around half a dozen different suits of formal wear. Several different black tie jackets, white tie and tails, white jacket, morning coat, formal dress kilt, frock coat and odds and ends. I haven’t had occaision to dress up in a couple of years but I’m ready for tea at the palace!
I regret that–even in New York–there is *nowhere *to wear a full-on evening gown anymore. The last time I wore one was to a New Year’s party for a law firm about 20 years ago.
The dressiest one can do without looking silly is a cocktail dress. Evening gowns only to go Met openings (the museum, I mean–even the opera is informal these days) and awards dinners, neither of which Baby gets invited to.
I like it. We went on a cruise last year and took at least two dress suits each so we had a choice on the night. In the end, for the one formal dinner, I wore a black dinner jacket with wing collar shirt and bow tie and my partner wore a tail coat with similar shirt and tie. I did have a white dinner jacket that I could have worn instead. No hats though.
I despise dressing up and I’d hate it even more if I had to lug extra clothing along on a vacation to do so.
I’m sure that was fine when everyone had a steamer trunk and there were porters everywhere. In this age of baggage fees, jammed planes, and moronic TSA screeners, I don’t want to bring anything extra along on a trip.
I hate suits. If circumstances require a sports jacket then I’ll wear that with a nice dress shirt. Clip-on tie in my pocket just in case I need to wear one.
I was born in the sixties when suits were so uncool. I’ve never changed my mind about them either. I got married in a nice sports jacket and dress shirt.
I’m no slob. I wouldn’t show up at any restaurant in a beater, cut off jeans and flip flops. I wear neat and wrinkle free clothing. But, no suits.
