You’re standing still at a red light. Turning is optional. The driver doesn’t know if it’s not clear, or you’re distracted, or you’re adjusting your seat etc.

How could it possibility escalate?

If its something obvious- blocking a turn, not going at a green, zooming past- then yes. Standing still at a red light and not taking an optional turn? Not so much. It’s an optional turn- people behind you have no place demanding you take it.

{Fixed your “you’re” for you. }It is technically an optional turn, but everyone is in their cars trying to get somewhere - if you want to do the stuff you do while parking, just park. If you want to drive, then drive.

As for escalation, it’s usually pretty clear when a driver is retaliating against another driver or trying to teach them a lesson - you cut me off, I honked at you, and now you aren’t turning on the red to show me who’s boss, etc.

If I’m not taking an optional turn, it’s because for one reason or another, I don’t feel safe taking it. And if I’m sitting behind someone who’s not taking an optional turn, I assume they’re not taking it because they don’t feel safe doing so. It doesn’t harm me any.
