Do you ever share pictures of your food?

I’m a chick, and yes: I sometimes post pictures of food on Facebook.

I’ve only done it a handful of times, but I’ll upload food pics if I’ve amused myself (one picture was of a mac and cheese container and a bag of cheese puffs: the theme for that meal was “food that is orange”), if I’m eating something unusual, etc. And I don’t usually post pictures of restaurant meals, but just this past Sunday I uploaded a pic of my awesome brunch.

I live in Northern Virginia, near Washington D.C.

My wife and some of her (female) friends sometimes take pictures of restaurant food. I think it’s kind of silly, but I’d make an exception for something truly unusual. For instance, once I got some kind of tropical drink served in a pineapple with all kinds of whacky decorations on it, and in that case I thought it was worth photographing.

Yeah what the hell. Here.

I know this is a thing, and I don’t do it personally, and I don’t know anybody who does this.

I do it all the time. I’m in Chicago and have lots of friends on the East Coast. We have sort of a Food Porn Rivalry going on.

I have done it. I did it when, as spring became a reality this year, I had a lovely and colorful lunch of bright red tomatoes, beautiful raw green beans, vibrant orange carrots and some other really nicely colored vegetables.

I also did it when we went to a local eatery and accidentally ordered a plate that ended up covering half the table with a “Dear god what have we done?” kinda comment.

I have gotten annoyed with people that seem to want to document every meal, but for the most part people seem to be photographing and posting food on FB with either the intention of showing how pretty or yummy something came out or with some funny commentary. It really is not on par with photographing bowel movements. And honestly, if my every once in a while food pics like this cause you such distress, you know where the ‘unfriend’ button is.

I have a FB friend who posts pics of French Toast. Nearly every weekend he goes somewhere new and orders French Toast and documents the meal photographically.

I don’t do this, but I do know several people who do. Personally, I don’t understand it at all. What is the picture of food supposed to make me do? Salivate? Feel jealous? I can’t smell or taste the picture. For all I know, it looks great but tastes like crap.

Is this about Martha Payne?

We need a “I have done it, but not regularly” option.

Sometimes when I am baking and I pull a beautiful loaf of bread or cake or something from the oven, I want share it. In the same way I want to share when I’ve finished knitting something.

Once I took a picture of food I was given in a restaurant because it was so greasy and disgusting, that I wanted to share how far downhill a formerly favored restaurant had gone.

Not regularly, but, yeah. Mostly stuff I’ve made myself and that I’ve been proud of. My favorite was the New Year’s a few years ago where we built a pit smoker out of cinder blocks and smoked 8 shoulders and various other meats on it.

I’m female and yes, I do post pictures sometimes on my friends only flickr account. I only do so if it’s something I’ve made myself that I’m particularly proud of (I love to bake, so cakes mostly) or if I’m eating in a restaurant and the meal is very good and/or very well presented.

Dude here, and yes, I will sometimes post FB pics of meals I’ve made which came out especially well, and even when out to eat of meals that I especially want my friends to be envious of.

Male; yes I do, usually as a way to indicate a nice relaxing time that I have or a nice dinner with my SO or with friends. (I am reluctant to post photos of the people I eat with, so I photograph the table w/o identifiable body parts).

Some examples of photographs that I havr posted on Facebook:

Shameless self-promotion…feel free to post here.

I do it all the time, but only of food I’ve made. A restaurant meal would have to be a big deal to get its photo taken… maybe if I ordered the “free if you eat it all” burger, or a famous dish at some restaurant or another. Or if my food looks like genitalia.

I post more photos on my blog than on Facebook, although I do blog about a lot more than just food. For a while I was trying to keep up with an album of food photos on Facebook, but now I just link to my blog posts.

Occasionally, if I’ve made something particularly interesting and/or hilarious. (Like the time I cooked a box of frozen pierogis and a bag of tater tots on the BBQ grill.)

Why the hell would I…? Nevermind. I don’t get foodies. At all.

I do it fairly often, but then I’m a food blogger so my self-worth is wrapped up in my belief that people give a damn about what I’m eating.

(I was at a food blogger conference a little while back and it was funny how every single one of us got lunch from the truck outside and immediately pulled out our cameras.)
