Assuming you mean alt-right videos, not really. I do watch takedowns of them, occasionally, and I keep myself informed of what they say in text form, but I don’t really watch the videos themselves.
I do watch some videos from people with different views than mine, if there is anything interesting about them based on the title and the first little bit. I just recently watched a video from some Christian college about how awesome Puddleglum is, for example. I didn’t agree with the sermon-like setup or some of the message, but it was an interesting idea of how depression and faith can intertwine.
But there’s a difference between “things from the other side” and “things that are so awful that it makes me angry to even watch the propaganda.” And, no, if you slip in edgy, clearly racist humor, I’m not going to watch your cryptofascist bullshit.
I’ve seen this stupid fucking movie before. In the next scene, the OP starts farting out posts like You know, I’m left of center, but don’t you think is Trump is right? About everything?
I used to not mind consuming the right-wing stuff if it was spoken about reasonably, at a logical level. I’m centre-left in the bell shaped curve, so centre-right is really just a few minor differences of opinion.
But it’s turned into an irrational dumpster-fire of angry hatred, and reasoned discourse just isn’t possible anymore. Somehow their level of intelligence has plummeted too. It’s frightening and frustrating. I have to stay away, for my own sanity’s sake.
But this movie has a 110% rating on the alt-right review aggregator site Putrid Potatoes, trailing only the Dinesh D’Souza documentary Liberals Suck, Right? and a looping GIF of Hillary Clinton being punched in the tits by Trump dressed as Uncle Sam.
It would be fun to hear the definitions. For many Americans I think FoxNews is the loyal center, while CNN is leftist. :smack:
I didn’t use to watch News videos, but frequently do now since the news has become so … interesting. Stephen Colbert is my favorite, but I also watch some commentary on MSNBC and CNN. I’m afraid I watch more for recreational outrage than information.
Since Colbert et al show clips from FoxNews I get my fill of them, but a few months ago I clicked on Michael Avenatti, barely noticing it was FoXNews. Avenatti was interviewed by Tucker Carlson, whom I’d never heard of.
Wow! At one point Avenatti mentioned that Carlson had promised not to use his favorite bully-brat insult on the air. Instead, unbeknownst to Avenatti, the insult was continually scrolling across the bottom of the screen. Avenatti was never allowed to finish a sentence — Carlson continually interrupted with a fresh insult or non sequitur.
But click the “Yes I did watch opposition” box for me, please. No plans to try again soon, though.
Once right wing argument became right wing propaganda, I stopped watching/listening/reading. I already know what they’re going to say, and I already know that it’s going to deliberately misconstrue truth and facts, so there’s no reason to watch. I don’t want to understand the conservative point of view; I want other people to simply wake the fuck up and educate themselves.
Occasionally, on an outlet like PBS News Hour, I will sometimes hear something that passes for a legitimate, reasonable viewpoint or analysis from a conservative. On Friday night, for example, I listened to Marco Rubio talking about the looming government shutdown, and I found it hard to disagree with what he was saying, pointing out that Democrats had a few months (or weeks ago?) agreed to funding a border wall or something along those lines (forgot exactly what he said to tell the truth but it made sense).
As an aside, I often find Rubio to be a caricature, but sometimes he ends up being half-assed intelligent and reasonable, unlike that chickenhawk clown from South Carolina who shall not be named.
Fox is probably the worst, but the rest are awful. Definitely not liberal. Financial bias. People use the term “right” and “left” out of laziness. There really is no left-wing in America, not since the 30s… Since CNN has no access to Trump, they’ll attack him for ratings. It doesn’t make it “liberal”, either… I also remember anyone on MSNBC who criticized going into Iraq was fired (Cenk, Donahue, etc). Same with the NYT, they fired Chris Hedges.
I don’t bother with YouTube for anything except the occasional how-to by someone with at least a passing familiarity with English or the rare music video. Oh, and puppies.
I’ll read op-eds by people I disagree with (the Wall St. Journal is good for this, as it has contributors with some degree of critical thinking capacity even though they are often wrong). Wading through a 20-30 minute video? Forget that.
I only watch how-to videos (e.g. how the hell do I open this stupid key fob without breaking it so I can replace the goddamn battery before I throw the piece of shit into the garbage disposal) and even then, begin seething if the chirpy twit doesn’t cut to the chase within the first fifteen seconds.
There is nothing more annoying than thinking you are getting an actual interview, only to find some guy taking a 2-minute story and stretching it to 20-30… A lot of filler, but when you find someone great, spread it around, and hopefully it’ll rise to the top, setting a better example for future YouTubers.
Probably trying to find the very few who’d actually click them, to be stored later in another database for future advertisements. That is odd, though. Do you remember what kind they were?
No… I don’t even watch youtube for political opinions I agree with, outside of maybe comedy routines.
As others have also said, I do read articles, blog posts and threads that seem to have a bias or view I don’t agree with. But sit through a tedious youtube video in the hopes that something of value will show up? There’s better ways than youtube to learn about complicated issues. And better uses for youtube, like animal videos.
I catalog Youtube videos a few days a week and I end up saving some to watch later (I only take about 15 seconds to catalog them) because they’re just so ridiculous I can’t just pass it by. I really never see “right of center” though. It’s always faaaar right stuff, especially the Clinton conspiracy stuff. Every once in a while I’ll encounter some far left stuff too though so it balances out.
